PK still #1 in the league with Campbell in net.
PP goal.
New guys looked decent.
Tavares doesnt look shell shocked from the injury (4 shots on goal, 16-7 (70%) on faceoffs tonight, drew a penalty)
Campbell with his best game since game 4.
Leafs beat the Habs AND the refs!

Good night tonight!

I agree that in the end the playoffs are what this team will be judged on. But I also think it sounds f***ing miserable spending 5 months just begrudgingly watching a team I am a fan of get wins along the way because of that fact. There is plenty of time to judge the team in the playoffs....in the playoffs. What the hell is the point in spending the half a year in between just being mad lol
regular season is a better indicator of how good a team is than just the playoffs. Anything can happen in a single playoff series, only a good team can win a presidents trophy or even a division.

The ride is meaningless in my opinion. Regular season means nothing other than a playoff spot. And if they can’t get that... sheesh.

I enjoyed Canada beating Panama tonight in the World Cup Qualifier. I tuned into this one for minutes at a time with mild interest.

I wish I had your optimism. Instead I have indifference. Much like the way they play in the playoffs.

I’ve personally divested. We’ve dropped a lot of money on this team over the years as a family. Home and on the road. No more.

If they cared... ie. did something in the offseason... maybe I’d have a different view. Instead the most inspiration story coming out of the pre-season is that John Tavares invited the players to his cottage to “keep it real.”

Just my opinion of course but that’s not going to want to make me spend $1,000 on a road trip.

Alas, I also love the Bills so it only gets worse. I do however understand why you feel jaded.

It is only one game, and he did play fairly well today, but I don't see the purpose of Sandin in this lineup.
Our coaching staff seemed to think he had more purpose being in the lineup than Dermott, Sandin logged 2 more minutes than him.. They STILL don't trust Dermott on the PK.

The Good Campbell, Nylander, Tavares, Kase, Kampf, the PK
The Bad Kerfoot, Keefe's coaching
The Ugly Engvall's shot on an empty net

Mostly Good

They miss Matthews and Mikheyev, but Mostly Matthews.
Agreed on most things except Keefe and Engval. Unless you mean only that one play. Cause he had a decent game until that last selfish play. Learning moment.
I loved the style of play which is what Keefe set out to do this year. I think this game shows us he made sure we were playing with heart.

Game 1 thoughts.

- It’s nice to have contract year Pierre Engvall back. Dubas should not give him any sort of extension until the season is done.

- Jack Campbell was terrific. that’s all that needs to be said.

- Really liked Bunting today

- really liked Kase and Kampf today. Those two will be big for our third line this season.

- fourth line was horrible. I’d bring Semyonov to Ottawa and give him a shot over Simmonds or Amadio.

- I think signing Nick Ritchie to a 2 year deal is gonna be well worth it.

- Rielly & Brodie, as well as Muzzin & Holl were their usual selves

- Sandin was solid enough. Dermott was fine

Well, actually I see that his purpose is playing on the 2PP, but I don't see how that keeps him in the lineup. He is not a special talent there, and I feel like you could put any of our other 4 defenseman (not including Rielly) or Liljegren and get much of the same result.

Meanwhile, Rielly played almost 3 minutes of PK time today. Nothing against him as a PKer, as he is solid, but he is at best our 4th best PKer. Rielly is going to play a ton of minutes this year even if he rarely plays on the PK. Shouldn't we be putting in Liljegren so he can take those PK minutes? Or putting Dermott on the PK, so he does something other than just play 3rd pairing ES minutes? Those two should be solid #4 PKers themselves so we shouldn't see much of a downgrade on the PK, and then we can give Rielly more minutes at ES and in the offensive end where he is one of the best in the NHL.

He had an assist, hit a post and it was him that made that beauty setup to Nylander that went through Allen fivehole and just wide right?

I thought he looked pretty good TBH.

5v5 tonight:

CF%: 70.81
xGF%: 69.83

Just finished, what a game!! Loved Bunting tonight, he looks like the type of guy I hate when we play against them.

He looks like he can make way more of a difference than Joe Thornton come playoff time.

That's enough for me.

He was solid. He made some questionable plays defensively but no doubt when he had the puck in the offensive zone, he was dangerous.

This is Sandin. And that's good.

Drew a key penalty and should have drawn at least 3 more penalties from what I saw. (Not sure why crosschecking and hits on the numbers became legal tonight)

Agree with pretty near every point. Add on that Nylander was dangerous all night too. Really liked Kase. Hope he can stay healthy

I don't really understand the "bad". What was bad about Keefe's coaching? Unless you are talking about our start... But it was a well-coached game besides that. Kerfoot was huge in that PK performance, and was one of our better ES players today too.

I would say the only "bad" was our 4th line (Amadio and Simmonds were useless all game and Spezza was mostly just fine on the PP and left on an island today) and the "ugly" was our entire team minus Campbell before the Habs goal (and that Engvall EN attempt).

Habs have a top 5 bottom 6 (as far as ranking bottom 6es go) so I'm not surprised a guy like Amadio looked way out of his league. Doesn't have the grit skill nor IQ (*cough* Brooks) to hang in there when teams dress their full NHL roster

im amazed how much shit and effort is given to the leafs 14th forward. ... lol

Really like the new setup, where each line got someone park in front of the net.
Ritchie might be slow but he is a huge body and hard to move in front of the net.
Kase and Bunting are warriors.
To those who used to say GOAT could be a great defensive C or Kerfoot can be a defensive C….Kampf is the stud defensive C that we been dying for.
His positioning is near perfect and his stick is very active.
Engvall had a great game beside the icing at the end, hope he keeps this up.
Soup is great tonight.

Good grindy end to the game. I don't have that same fear of collapse anymore in every game we lead. Campbell gives me confidence.

PK looked really good.
