Leaf Season Optimism Thread

So the Leafs have the worst PDO in the Atlantic and the highest offensive zone possession time. Those two factors alone point to a turn in play soon. Gotta think they’ll start taking the puck into the middle of the zone soon, like they did last year. Against a team like Philly that keeps teams to the outside it’s a good opportunity to change the season narrative.

Talent is the single biggest differentiator of NHL teams over the regular season, and this team has plenty of talent. Auston Matthews will get going, Marner will get going, and the October drama will become a memory. They always get going, and once they are going, they win us a lot of hockey games.

Even though I’m having a good time posting in the drama threads, I’m not even slightly worried about our playoff hopes, nor do I have any misgivings about the roster that I haven’t in previous years. Seen this song and dance before and that’s part of the problem, but I also know that this team is closer to getting it right than we are to missing the playoffs.

Very weird thread.

Can you imagine the leafs tearing the league up ten games in and someone created a "leafs pessimism thread" and everyone in it just pretended all the leafs players had been sucking so far? It's just so strange...
If the Leafs were 8-2 there would be countless threads saying they aren't winning the correct way, or "it doesn't matter if they win now, they have to win the in playoffs."

So yes, I can easily imagine it.

Samsonov is playing better than expected.

Lilly will be back soon.

Matthews is starting to heat up.

Nylander is looking really good, especially centering Robertson and Malgin.

That begs the question, why is it taking them so long to play the way they know they need to

I salute you, DragoGrizzly. your courage is impressive.
Courage or stupid naïveté? Doesn’t matter, the hope part of being a fan is way more fun. I get that the hope part is tough considering how long we’ve been kicked in the nuts by this team, but I hope they’re not ready to throw in the towel just yet.

The team finally showed up for a full 60, and looked absolutely dominant. So there’s that!

I am all for this thread. As bad as we have played to start the year, and even though there appears to be a tangible difference in the effectiveness of our play from years past, I still remain optimistic. I always will.

I just will never understand paying $200+ to go to a game to throw your $200+ jersey on the ice, or boo Justin Holl every time he makes a mistake.

I will be the first one to admit Justin is having a tough year, but my god I am so tired of people dogging him. He's not putting a gun to Sheldon's head asking him to play 20mins/night. He is in over his head because of injury, give the f***ing guy a break. We should be supporting our players thick and thin. It's fair to be critical when warranted, which has been the case thus far for Justin. But to single out Justin and boo him in our own barn? terrible look IMO.

I'm gunna show the big fella some love. He made a play last night that saved a goal on the PK. Something that was praised by the broadcast crew as it unfolded, but likely something that doesn't get mentioned within our fanbase enough.

Thick and thin, I'll bleed blue and white.

I was very happy with Malgin and Holmberg last night. It's nice to see guys that can skate and make plays in the bottom 6.

If we can bring in a legit defensive;y sound top 4 RD, I would feel a lot better about the group overall. There are some interesting forwards that can rotate in and stay hungry, and Knies might be joining us for the playoffs.

best news is your anthem singer isn’t returning Martina Ortiz, she was awful, thought she was Mariah Carey, it’s an anthem just sing it it’s not a pop song, the one the other night had a great voice

Not sure if this is being optimistic but the general rule of thumb in the NHL is you want to win 3 games out of 5. 6 points in 10 games. It works out to 98.4 points over 82 games. The Leafs are currently on pace for 89.4 points. If they win tonight they would be on pace for 95.7 points, if they win Saturday and Sunday they would be on pace for 100.9 points. As underwhelming as this season has been, the team really is not all that far off the target.

They’re in a five game slump, it happens, but they better pull out it of soon.

Good thread. I'm as disappointed as anyone but it's not like anyone has added anything new in all the negative threads.
I would add Kral as potential positive as well. He lost the puck on that one breakout attempt but otherwise he's looked like he belongs.
He reminds me of gunnarsson. Hopefully he ends up like that

Some things you just have to laugh at. The combination of the poster and the post is just too juicy. No,no…..of course that’s completely unimaginable.

Reasons for Optimism
The big team has absolutely slept through the 1st month of the season yet hasn't dug themselves a hole

Samsonov looking good

Two Marlies with solid NHL debuts

3 more Marlies crushing the A putting their hats in the ring to be this years Hyman/Kap/Johnsson/Moore/Engvall

Too many prospects to name just crushing their respective leagues.

I think the leafs have figured out it doesn't matter if they finish first or 8th. Why burn yourself out for reg season records, it's all about round one now.

Another game to be optimistic about… the Bruins on a heater.

Go Leafs

Yeah, but if Toronto hovers around 8th for a significant period there won't be a lot of optimism.
