I think we have a couple of good prospects, I just don't want them traded for rentals that might win us an extra game or two.

Unfortunately, Dubas' misguided faith in this team every year that led to big moves most deadlines has left the cupboards nearly empty (I believe 2 total picks in the first two rounds over the next 3 years, for example).

Another reason (besides lack of faith in this team) why going "all in" (or even "partially in") will be tough: Other teams have more attractive assets to offer for the premium rentals.

As if anyone knows. He could also agree to be traded to a contender, or he could re-sign because he likes it here.
Too early to predict but if the team is a bottom feeder for a few years, IMO he walks or is traded to a US team if he wants out earlier. Definitely not fretting about it today as we are contenders, and we are 5 years away from reaching that bridge.

Whether you want to say Dubas or Shanahan is primarily to blame, the bottom line is the team is not a serious playoff contender this year, or likely next, and trading picks or prospects for rentals isn't likely to change that.

I’m gonna wait until after the trade deadline to determine whether they are a cup contender. I think if Klingberg gets LTIR’d and we make two moves on D we are as good as any of the other top teams. Maybe a 3C trade too.

We find another schenn a ( 3rd + a prospect ) type of player nothingbbig we don't have alot of prospects to pull it of and our high pks were trading in previous yrs.
In the offseason sign 2 UFA defencemen.

You can't unload all your prospects and top picks every tear.

Vegas who just won the cup has
1 st 2nd 3rd in the next 3 yrs
Carolina has
1st 2nd 3rd in the next 3 yrs
Toronto
1st no 2nd 3rd
No 1st no 2nd 3rd
1st 2nd 3rd

If we dive deep this year we can't next year

Build the defense in the offseason

If we are going to have 4 forwards eating uphalf our cap we need top ELC contracts Knies Cowen Minten in our lineup.

The only thing I would do is at the deadline Woll is the real deal and Sammy gets his game together trade him

Considering Matthews is signed with a NMC and Marner has a NMC along with JT.

Really the only value you have is Nylander. Thing is if you trade him you just know it's going to be for a bunch picks and he will obviously win a cup within 3 years like everyone else that is good whom we trade away.

Dubas didn’t leave a mess. Shanahan is an idiot. Dubas left the team in a fixable position. We had quite a bit of cap space this summer. Dubas didn’t hold a gun to Brad’s head and say sign Klingberg to a 4 million dollar contract. The two things Dubas screwed us on was ruining the internal cap situation and depleting our picks.

The NMC for Marner didn’t kick in until the summer. If Shanahan gave the go ahead we could have and should have traded Marner. But Shanahan took it upon himself to call each core member and tell them they are not getting traded before even hiring Brad. So right from the jump Brad’s hands were tied. This is why I believe Kyle, because Shanahan makes decisions like that, which completely handcuff the team and sewers the other guy (whoever the GM is). It’s hard to work in an environment when your president is constantly working to cater to 5 guys.
I agree Shanahan is a huge idiot. Every move he makes is the worst one for the club. Toronto has for years hired NHL insiders who destroy the club in open view while using some Pejorative Slured rationale. Based on the playoffs we owe very little to our top 4. We should have dumped Marner. You will not win a cup with a player like him.

I agree. Leaf fans never look ahead. The amount of own rentals and picks we dumped for so little is mind boggling. We have now backed ourselves into a corner and have very little to offer at TD. The team will not be able to acquire the players they need to win. We all know the outcome. They may luck out and win one round and then finally once it's too late they break up the top 4. There is no way we can keep these guys together.

The fans have nothing to do with it.

That's isn't what I'm saying. I'm saying there are some serious issues with where this build has gone up ahead. We have no picks(too few), we have no real defenseman prospects and quite frankly we won't be able to add at TD like last year.
