Sandin had an excellent preseason and will play in the NHL tonight. Lundqvist, against men is excelling. So is Miller against tougher competition. Smith, when faced with his hardest test (and very rarely has he faced any challenge thus far), failed quite miserably.
Except last year he had s great camp and preseason and was the last cut on the team and probably should’ve made the team.

I could be wrong but once a player is sent back to juniors but has an entry level deal, couldn't NHL teams call them up directly from juniors if they wanted?

Maybe Smith down in the WHL is just a short term thing until they can further evaluate a) Greene possibly being done as an NHLer or b) Mueller and Carrick being awful

He can't be called back up.

We have an "against men" appearance.

Thomas Chabot must have "failed quite miserably" having been sent back to junior in his D+2 season.

Montréal called up Sergachev during the 2017 season, while his junior team was still playing.

In emergency situations - yes. Oilers had exhausted all AHL D in 06-07 and called up a junior D:

Fair enough, there is a way to temporarily bring a junior player back up. New Jersey would need to be in an emergency situation after failing to bring up an AHL option however and Smith's call up would only be temporary. It's not as if the team can just call Smith up if in the middle of January if he's been looking really good in the WHL.

This. This, this, this.

What started as a discussion point of, “X player is already physically matured, he might learn some things a little earlier if he could go to the AHL,” has somehow turned into a universal, “playing in the CHL at 19 is bad for your development,” in just a few years.

Yeah it is ridiculous, fans are so eager to see their new shiny prospects get to the NHL as soon as possible that they think as soon as they’re drafted they have nothing left to learn in junior. I saw someone saw Bowen Byram has nothing left to prove in junior, really? The kid has played only two seasons of junior hockey, has been very good so far, but he certainly has a lot to learn and develop on.

not surprising to me at all that he was sent back. Ive watched him a lot the past few years and as good as he is in junior, I truly never felt he was NHL ready yet. IMO he needs another season in junior to clean up parts of his game.

Again, I like him a lot and I'm not ragging on the guy but this isn't surprising at all to me

I don't know why fans wanna rush guys so bad. I realize a lot of it is probably bragging rights that their team drafted well, but sometimes guys need extra time. There have been so many young NHLers that came back for their 19 year old season and they are doing quite well in the NHL lol... I remember when Barzal and Domi(just to name 2 of MANY over the years) were sent back for 19 year old season, fans were starting to throw the "bust" word around haha

Right, right.

Wonder if you coming in here has anything to do with that poll between Smith Dobson Sandin (there was one more, but i forget) where Sandin got absolutely buried and leafs fans cried about it... definitely didn't see you in that thread at all!
that kind of made the fact that his comment lead to a lot of "crying" from Devil's fans pretty funny. Whether he's a troll or not, 1 post got about 5-6 different responses, taking over the thread for a couple of pages lol.

It feels almost like some people are treating it like he got sent back for an OA season. He's 19, not the biggest kid, sometimes it's just a matter of time to add strength. Obviously if he showed well last camp, you'd like to see that continue to improve, but he's far from the first and won't be the last 1st round pick D man to get sent back. At this point he's maybe just not exceeding expectations, I wouldn't be too worried.

I was going to write a bigger reply but I think lol is sufficient.

I think Ty Smith may have had the most underwhelming tournament

I really liked what I saw in the WHL and thought NJD had a steal but if I could describe his tournament with a sound, it would be a wet fart.

I thought Smith was pretty bad. Seems to be lacking confidence or something because he looked much better last year.

Was misused but certainly played better last year. Hunter not a good coach for puck moving defensmen to be on. As lackluster as he was only Drysdale and Bernard-Docker were better than him.

Really unimpressive player. Like I said and got bashed for it, he's been lapped by quite a distance by Romanov, Sandin, and Lundqvist. Just doesn't do anything particularly well at all.

Lets not go overboard here, he is elite distributing the puck and running a PP. His breakouts were miles better than the second best player on the team. Hell, the guy won CHL defensmen of the year as an 18 year old.

Addison literally played the same role and was miles better.

First, no he wasn't. Addison got 80% of the PP time with Canada's best players and 5 on 5 Smith moved the puck better than Addison and was much better in his own end. I do like Addison though.
Second, Smith was playing his offside with McIssac, maybe the worst defensmen 5 on 5 Canada has ever brought.

lol Smith had a good tournament and played the role he was assigned with well. Moved the puck really well and did a good job shutting down the other team. If you don't get PP1 time in the WJC you aren't going to put up big numbers. He's better suited to a offensive role but as seen can play a defensive role also. Addison got the PP1 role when I didn't think he should've even been on the team
