that set the record, and he broke it again last night. I think he'll have quite an adjustment period dealing with the speed of the NHL though.

He looked fine in camp as an 18 year old and struggled as a 19 year old. He started a bit slow in juniors this season but post WJC has really picked it up. He probably starts in the AHL next season and then it will be up to him to progress. He’s got the brains to process the game it seems so at some point you expect him to make the jump and stick.

He actually only won Western Conference Defenseman of the year this season , so far.

Nah. He won WHL dman of the year. Last year he won WHL and also the CHL dman of the year. The CHL dman of the year hasn't been announced yet and is the winner for the 3 leagues (W, O, and Q) not conferences.

I really dont understand how Ty Smith can win all these WHL and CHL awards ahead of the likes of Bowen Byram for two years in a row, and yet still not be ranked as one of top 3 prospects in the junior league.

What am I missing from Smith's game that isn't going to translate into NHL that causes scouts to downgrade him.

The Hockey News has him ranked at 45th overall in future watch, which I cant understand, given Smith has improved from his prior season and played a big role in securing Canada gold at WJC.

I didn't get a chance to see byram this season, but last year in his draft year you could tell his hockey sense is magical. Brainy hockey. He's a very smooth skater too. I think that's part of what scouts believe will translate so well with him. I'd be shocked if he wasn't consistently putting up 40+ points in his prime.

On the other hand, ty seems like a traditional safe guy who will be 25-30 points and pretty good steady defence. I don't see any high end star potential with him. Great guy to have on a team though.

Completely disagree. He’s a stud on the transition, even if he’s more “traditional” in that he’s more likely to make the stretch pass than skate with it - although he can do that just fine as well. He’s also a smart PPQB and is only really lacking a hard shot, but he gets it through really well.

Honestly, I’d be rather disappointed if he only ever reaches 25-30 points. I think he’s got a 50+ point ceiling and will definitely crest 40 in his prime, even while being very responsible defensively.

WHL awards aren't very indicative of how their game translates to the NHL. List of Bill Hunter Award (Best WHL Defenseman):

Definitely some good company on the list, but quite a few busts as well. Pouliot won WHL awards ahead of his peers such as Rielly, Murray, Dumba - obviously that didn't translate. Players develop at different rates and have different trajectories, it's similar to why Smith's teammate Beckman can put up 107 pts in his D+1 year and still not be a top 50 prospect. Just because a player is dominant in junior doesn't mean it translates, because there's certain tendencies which allow a player to dominate junior but not make the next step.

Just to be clear, i'm not saying Ty Smith is like that. He's a fantastic prospect, but i'm not going to pretend like I watch Byram or Smith enough to say why they are ranked where they are. Just that junior awards aren't the best judgement of a player's potential.

Read what I said. He won WESTERN CONFERENCE D Man of the year in the WHL THIS SEASON.

Smith doesn't quite have the same dynamic skill set that Byram has and doesn't play with the same edge but Byram is the best prospect in hockey until Lafreniere gets drafted. Smith himself is still one of the best prospects himself and should be a great addition to the Devils blue line next year. Smith is extremely smart and his skating is so good he should fit very well into today's nhl. I personally put 0 stock in anything the hockey news does. As for points I think he'll be able to produce around 30-35 points at even strength. Whether he is able to crack 50 will depend how many free points he gets on the pp. If he's pp1 for the devils which I think he could be 50ish points realistically. For a dman if you're pp1 you're basically getting 20ish free points a year so even strength production is more important to how I value the players
