Show Me What You Got!
Maybe Ty does deserve to be ranked closer or higher then some of his peers in his draft year.
I hope your right... he's coming off a solid season and I remember he left an impression during last seasons training campStill confused how Ty fell to 17th but really glad he did
He could possibly jump into a top-4 role this coming season
Do they have room to carry him as an extra D? Pre-season is generally more chaotic than regular-season hockey is anyway, maybe he'll look better then. When the general consensus on HF Devs is he looked out of place and overmatched during camp and preseason, you know he looked REALLY bad.
I've never seen that sub criticize a top prospect like this before.
That said, I don't know if he necessarily gets sent back to the Chiefs. It's a tough situation because he really doesn't have much else to prove in the WHL, but doesn't look at all ready for the NHL. To be fair to him though, part of his problems could be the Devils' "full ******" defensive "system" that relies on dmen chasing players up the boards and shifting out of the middle far too often for NHL hockey. Hopefully people will realize how horrendous the system is now that the roster is actually decent (so can't just harp on the excuse of lack of talent).
edit: I can't believe the "r" word from Tropic Thunder is censored...
Defensemen of the year I believe. Lafreniere won player of the year.Didn't he win CHL player of the year? Or dman of the year? This is where the CHL/NHL agreement goes full stupid. A guy who absolutely needs to be in the AHL can't be there.

Spending another year in the WHL next year would be a giant waste of time.
The difference between juniors and professional hockey is huge.
Nothing wrong with going to the AHL when eligible.
Like I said.I mean, he nearly made the Devils as an 18 year old and is producing at a historic clip in his league.
We have 5 dmen pencilled in (Subban, Vatanen, Severson, Greene, Butcher) and are carrying two extra (Mueller and Carrick). So Smith would make 8.Do they have room to carry him as an extra D? Pre-season is generally more chaotic than regular-season hockey is anyway, maybe he'll look better then.
Not that these players are in the same league but I hope they don't treat him like Matteau where he was in and out for half a season before being sent down. He may not have anything to "learn" in the WHL but he will still develop his skills more playing a lot more minutes and a lot more frequently in the WHL than if he's going to be sat regularly in the NHLWe have 5 dmen pencilled in (Subban, Vatanen, Severson, Greene, Butcher) and are carrying two extra (Mueller and Carrick). I think the best play is to dump Mueller, keep Smith, and rotate him and Carrick into #6. Smith will not learn anything in juniors. He needs to be getting coached by NHL coaches and practice against NHL players.
I don't discount that this is just nerves, last year he came in with nothing to lose and no expectations, and now a lot of people are expecting him to come in and be a top-4 on an NHL D by Christmas. At least give him the 9 games and see if he can settle in.
That's why watching the games mattersI didn't see any Devils pre-season, but Ty Smith has a better CF% & xG% than Severson, Greene, Butcher, Mueller & Carrick, yet, based on these 3-4 games, can't make the team or, if he made it, will only be the 8th d-man. Hmmmm

He could easily be put on the 3rd pairing. The two guys that would be put in that spot are not better than him even with his mistakes.Do they have room to carry him as an extra D? Pre-season is generally more chaotic than regular-season hockey is anyway, maybe he'll look better then.
Yea and watching the game he’s been better than some of the guys mentioned in that post you quoted. Greene should honestly probably have retired, he looks terrible. Carrick and Mueller have done nothing to show they should be on the team over a rookie that’s struggling in the preseason. That's why watching the games matters
The issue is the sample size vs NHL quality is much bigger with the others than Smith. Smith has only had last preseason and this preseason. We've seen full seasons of the others so we can better approximate what we will get. Smith hasn't shown he is NHL ready from this preseasonYea and watching the game he’s been better than some of the guys mentioned in that post you quoted. those advanced stats are completely irrelevant and he's competing with a bunch of defenders on one way contracts. he's got no advantage or leverage whatsoever.I didn't see any Devils pre-season, but Ty Smith has a better CF% & xG% than Severson, Greene, Butcher, Mueller & Carrick, yet, based on these 3-4 games, can't make the team or, if he made it, will only be the 8th d-man.
