Yeah im fantasizing for the team im cheering for to have brutal turnovers all over the ice. That makes sense.
He didn't have "turnover all over the ice", that's complete nonsense. He had a few turnovers, but his successful passes and transitions far outweighed any turnovers he had. His positioning and zone coverage over all was very good.

I don't know what scouts you supposedly know either (not that it matters, since it's just an appeal to authority), but his high hockey IQ has always been one of his biggest assets as well. That's laughable that you are claiming it's his weakness.

I am re-watching the game right now ill have a detailed breakdown of every one up to the middle of the second period.

One former Scout of the Ottawa Senators and one current one with Philly. Didnt say it was a weakness, said that he makes irresponsible plays with the puck. Stop being so defensive and making things up.

Now do the same for every Canadian defensemen and maybe it will be meaningful, especially compared with their successful passes. Every player has turnovers, and every player who has the puck a lot has a lot more turnovers.

How many goals did these "turnovers all over the ice" cost Canada? How many high danger scoring chances came from them? How many did he create with his passing the other way? How did all of their zone coverage, gap control, awareness, etc. compare?

I mean, basically every other scouting report praises his smart puck decisions...but to each their own I guess.

Smith has not seemed to have anymore turnovers than Hughes, Boqvist, or any of the other high end defensemen in this tourney.

Looking back at your post history, it’s clear you’re not particularly a fan of Smith’s game, and that’s fine. But your assessments of the abundance his “turnovers” seems pretty over dramatic.

Canada vs Swiss

Period 1

18:41 1 on 3 gets out muscled loses his helmet goes off the ice while swiss have possession in the offensive zone (IIHF Rule).

15:16 of the first period Errant easy outlet pass goes all the way down the ice

13 to 12:12 Makes two strong plays to outlet and keep the puck in the offensive zone

12 minute mark give away right up the middle on the tape to Kurashev. Irresponsible Turnover number 1.

10:08 Strong outlet pass. Followed by soft rim to get the puck out strong play.

6:26 Smith has time in the corner soft rim on his back hand to turn the puck over.

4:26 Strong blue line hold by Smith with pressure coming.

3:30 Strongest play of the period for Smith. Scott gives it away he gets a reverse from Dobson with pressure maneuvers around the forchecker to make a direct pass to the winger to relieve pressure.

Side note Comtois was an absolute force this period after rewatching it. A man among boys, several huge hits multiple shots and created a ton of turnovers.

Period 2

19:00 Smith has an easy dump into the corner while holding the blue forces it up the middle and its picked off. Irresponsible Turnover number 2.

18:46 Smith with an impressive saucer pass in the neutral zone to Hayton.

16:24 Smith has the puck at the left point with everyone deep has an easy chip into the corner to a teammate forchecking but throws it cross ice for no reason and its picked off with an odd man rush against. Great back pressure and a bad play by the swiss negate the scoring chance Irresponsible turnover number 3.

16:11 Smith has an open breakaway pass for Leason and misses the mark

14:00 Directly after Canada made it 2-1. Smith has the puck behind his own net passes it directly infront to a swiss player direct shot in the slot. Irresponsible turnover number 4.

I have to go and cant watch anymore at this moment. I will say this Smith was very good against the Czechs and clearly has alot of skill and mobility. However his decision making at crucial points in this game was highly questionable. In a tight game in a tight tournament like this there is no room for these types of selfish plays. I can recognize his talent, I drafted him in a keeper league so I am paying close attention. If he can reduce the risk in his game and pick his spots better he is going to be a great player. However I have never played on a team where a D man can get away with this many enormous turnovers in half a game without either being benched or being chewed out. Now I dont know what goes on behind closed doors but Veleno and Lafrennier were not worse than Smith in this game and they got racked through the coals.

Side note Dobson was rock solid in this game, an absolute stud back there, no mistakes, safe plays an efficient player. Scored a huge goal too but that's not what impressed me most. He took hits to make plays to get pucks out and was a real leader on the back end.

Bouchard had two very bad turnovers too, I know it comes with the territory for both him and Smith with the roles they have on this team. Its not that I dont expect these things to happen, they will happen its hockey I just hope to see players of this level to make more responsible decisions in tight and important games.

1.20 - David Quenneville
1.18 - Ivan Provorov
1.14 - Tyson Barrie
1.13 - Shea Theodore
1.13 - Henri Jokiharju
1.12 - Calen Addison (this season, it's early)

Pretty good list of players. Smith has the highest PPG as a U18 player since the lockout and is currently leading all U19 players since the lockout in PPG as well.

HISTORIC - let's hope his game translates well.

If you're going to copy my previous post at least update it properly!

I removed Addison because he's now at 0.94 PPG and added Byram who is currently 1.0 PPG.

So Devils fan, is he a lock to make the team out of the training camp or is he likely to spend some time in the AHL?
I believe his only options are NHL or back to junior. His odds are very good of making the team, we’re pretty thin on d as it stands and he doesn’t have much more to prove down there. And I believe he plays on the both the left and right side making it easier for him to slot in. Bet on him making it.
