I feel like Smith's defensive game is super overlooked. He's out ****ing standing at both ends of the ice.

He really controls the game at both sides of the rink at this level. But it'd be hard not to with his calmness and intelligence with the puck. He just has that unflappable quality you want in an all-situations D-man.

You mean the DeAngelo in the NHL? Of course he's going to look different than Smith who is playing in the WHL.

Would you prefer if I said Ryan Ellis, who lit up the OHL as well? Both Ellis and DeAngelos are comparables. They're all 5'10-5'11 defenseman who 'were the best offensive defenseman of the OHL in the last 15-20 years' drafted in the mid 1st.

My point is that he was drafted because he's an offensive defenseman who should be putting up tons of point in the CHL. There was never going to be any concern about putting up numbers in the CHL. The question mark will be how his game translates to the pro level. Both DeAngelo and Ellis had a hard transition and both were considered busts as some point - they are both doing fine now.

I'm really confused why people think comparing Ty Smith to what his peers did in the CHL is some sort of insult.

You seem to severely underrate Smith's ability to play defense. If Smith was an inch or two taller he'd have been a top 5 pick. Guys like DeAngelo would have never gone that high. He had a reputation for being a hothead and defensive liability. Ellis is a better comparable, but Ellis was actually smaller than Smith on draft day albeit being a few months older. It's also fair to say that Smith is better defensively and has higher hockey IQ than Ellis had as a prospect, but that's nitpicking.

I don’t follow the WHL much but those are impressive totals for sure. Need to watch some games to determine how his defencive game is but the general perception is its good so that’s exiting.

He's a very smart player and is sound defensively. His biggest weakness is his lack of size. If he had been 6'1/6'2 he'd have gone top 10 for sure, maybe even top 5.

If he was 6'1/6'2 there's no way any dman in that draft other than Dahlin is taken before him. Size is still a huge factor in drafting.

Just want to post in here before people finally realize how good he is playing for Team Canada.

Still no doubt in my mind only Dahlin will be a better defenseman from this draft.

Same here. Far and away the best defenseman after Dahlin.

Far and away seems like an overstatement. I could see an argument to put him above guys like Hughes, Dobson, and/or Bouchard (hell, I had Smith top 10 in my personal pre-draft rankings), but to say he's clearcut better is silly given the seasons that especially Hughes and Bouchard are having (Dobson's team was holding him back significantly).

Hughes might have an argument but Smith is miles ahead of Bouchard and Dobson.

Weird you’d say that as most have Bouchard as Canada’s number 1 d headed into the WJC. Not that it will be that way, but to say a player is “miles ahead” of other d man chose around him what like 6 months after the draft, is just silly

Happy i predicted this (so far), I thought he'd end up one of the biggest steals of the draft at 17. Which i know isn't "steal" territory but he's just that good IMO....should've been top 10ish

Bouchard is a '99 birthday. Canada always favours seniority. The whole WJC roster selection is more of a political thing than a skill thing (coaches sticking with their own players, etc.)

I had them like this:

Dahlin - potential for #1 in the NHL
Smith - Elite #1
Hughes - #1
Boqvist - #2
Dobson - #2/3
Bouchard - #4

Great draft for D.
From your lips to God's ears. I know in the exhibition matches Hunter was playing Smith 3rd pair minutes. Is he projected to get a top 4 look during the tournament?

Not sure. Best defensive prospect in the world imo though, so he should be?
