I also read that he isn't even the best dman in the WHL. Now I'm just confused.

Q. Hughes to NJ

Pretty hard to judge this honestly, they went with Ty Smith who is pretty awesome but a the same time they decide to leave the defenceman with the best PPG in the CHL this year over him. I believe they choose Smith because he's 1 year younger then Brook and was selected 17th last year. Same thing with Bouchard, I don't believe he was the best defenceman this season in the OHL. He's great on the PP but defensively, he's not dominant IMO. I think Wilde was the best defenceman in the OHL this season.

Q. Hughes to NJ

I love Smith in junior but have always questioned his pro potential. Sure he puts up good point totals but honestly i dont consider him the best dman. 3 or 4 dmen come to mind instantly that i prefer more.

In no order i consider Byram, Alexeyev, Brook and possibly Woo better dmen off the top of my head

I consider Byram the best dman in the league... Also Im absurdly high on Alexeyev and think his pro potential is though the roof

We will almost definitely find out what his NHL potential is next season.

So Devils fan, is he a lock to make the team out of the training camp or is he likely to spend some time in the AHL?

He impressed the coaches enough last training camp to make the final pre-season game and was the final cut. The coaches gave glowing reviews of his play during that time.

They so far are -Lovejoy, -Gryba -Yakovlev +Carrick so there are potential spots available - Another strong training camp and he'll be on the NHL roster.

He was noticeable on the ice in a good way in the NHL preseason. No reason to think he won’t improve on that headed into next season. I don’t expect instant success but he can play protected minutes on the third pair and hopefully push some of the guys ahead of him over the course of the season.

Best defensive prospect in the world, still.
I’m my opinion, I would have Brannstrom, Hughes, Makar, Dobson, Fox and maybe Bouchard above him in no particular order. He’s definitely top 10, but to say the best? That’s a bit of a reach.
Interesting take however.

I don’t think Fox belongs in that group...and no, I’m not just saying that because I’m a Devils fan.

He should have a good shot at cracking NJ's lineup next season, especially since there's nothing left to prove in the WHL and that's his only other option.

Worked out well for both that he didn't make the team this year, as he developed nicely at Spokane, doesn't have to be protected in the expansion draft and the Devils awful season resulted in getting the chance to draft Hughes #1.

Only Makar, Hughes and Byram are close to him imo. He's way better than Brannstrom, Dobson, and Bouchard. Not sure about Fox.

Is it still going to be funny when Brannstrom is back in Sweden in 5 years?

The only way hes back in Sweden in 5 years is if he gets into trouble, there is a lockout or its the offseason.

Dude is the stud of all studs.

Smith can't hold his jock, and I happen to think Smith is a strong prospect, even if hes grossly overrated by Devil Fans.

Not sold on him. I dont think he will completely bust and not make the NHL but I don't think his game will translate or transition as well from Jr to NHL. I compare him to Vince Dunn Of STL

Hes in the 3rd teir of Defensive prospects.

Dahlin Heiskanen

Makar Hughes Brannstrom

Bouchard Smith Boqvist Dobson Fox etc..

He should be on the opening night roster. Personally, I thought he did enough to make the opening night roster last year but he was the last cut in what was simply a numbers game. I'm excited to see what the young prospects can do this fall.

ya that's why I don't hype them, and tend to be more optimistic about 1sts instead

Imo Makar and Hughes are separate from the pack. Why do you see Smith being better than Brannstrom Dobson Bouchard? Honestly, if I had my pick it would be Brannstrom or Smith, but curious to know why Smith is way better in your opinion.
