LD Shakir Mukhamadullin (2020, 20th, NJD; traded to SJS)

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
As it was initially reported, he is now back on loan to Salavat Yulaev for the coming season.

He moves his feet well. But looks like he gets caught watching a lot and a little weak battling for the puck. Also, could be his height, but the stick looks very short. Good for controlling the puck but might hurt him defending.

To be fair he’s 20 and he’s playing in all situations in the KHL And a fair amount of it on his off hand. Once he fills out his frame he should be sturdy enough for the NHL.

I like him but he tends to watch too much, not keeping his feet moving. Puts him in some awkward positions defensively. I hope he is in Utica next season. Maybe even NJ.

Not going to lie, his progress over the last year or so has been pretty disappointing. Same issues, same mistakes, same impact. At this point, you have to be pretty crazy to take him over Nikishin who has been drafted 50 positions lower.

I thought it was already confirmed that he is going to be on loan in the KHL for this season.

Also he is nowhere near ready to be in NJ, heck i dont even think he is ready for Utica. He needs waaaay more time to marinate, he is super raw... He has regressed, at best he has stagnated. Not looking great thus far.

I meant next season as in after 22-23, my bad. He is on loan to Ufa for this season. Didn't feel comfortable in North America yet after a short stint in Utica. He's definitely a project.

I read the comments. Some are a little out of touch with reality, some contain a healthy core, some are too optimistic, some are too pessimistic. Those who are really interested in Shakir's development can watch his game for themselves. Or in games, or in my videos.

Shakir Mukhamadullin,
#85, white jersey
Salavat against Admiral, 15 sept 2022
All actions, good and bad

Quietly roaring back with 3 points in the last 4 games, in 3 of those SYu didn't allow a single goal.

I could also write confidently about it being 3 points in 4 games midway through first because this game is over for him thanks to the match penalty

I've been one of the bigger Shakir's supporters throughout the history of this thread and he wasn't a bad pick, he had very intriguing skillset but you can't argue his development has been.. slow.

It's ok for a defenseman though.

The offensive output is ok, rest is still bad/worrisome. He still only plays 15 minutes per game, his role has barely changed over the last 3 years. The only positive this season is that he shows at least some improvement. But it's only an improvement over what was, frankly, pretty awful D+2 last year.

Perhaps I'm wrong but isn't having a young defenseman playing in the KHL a more recent thing?

Hard to know if his Development is slow when not many other Defenseman have done it.

Everything you offer is just your opinion. Maybe he pans out maybe he doesn’t but to my eyes he looks much better than at anytime thr past two years. His biggest problem to me is he’s still lanky and needs to fill out. Time will tell.

He improved very little season to season, what do other defensemen have to do with it.

Most other defensemen aren't really expected to score at the KHL at a such young age (maybe Dmitri Orlov being the only notable exception and even he left the KHL when he was 19), that much is correct but that's what made his skillset so unique in the first place.

His ice time or point production is not an opinion. What YOU offer is the opinion. What I'm saying is how coaches view him which is probably as close to the objective evaluation as one can come across.

I'd add that Branden Schneider who will forever be linked to Mukhamadullin because the Rangers traded up to get him right before we picked Shakir hasn't really shown much to differentiate from Muk.

AHL>KHL>NHL

I don't see Muk not being abe to do what Schneider has in the NHL.

Fair enough but he’s not really an offensive defender to my eyes. He started slow this year but has really picked it up points wise. The light goes on for different guys at different times some guys may be ahead of him and that’s fine. Doesn’t mean he can’t eventually play an NHL role. And yes I offer an opinion. I have no problem with that. I think he moves much shyer than he used to. Much more decisive. Will it matter? It’s way too early. I expect he returns to the KHL after NJ plays him in Utica next season and maybe he tries again in a couple of years. Unless Luke Hughes falls apart Mukh’s long term position is as a third pair defender. That’s not too high of a bar
