People who have watched him play this year, has he improved on his defensive abilities and decision making?

When he was drafted, these were his clear weaknesses.

I actually want him to stay in Russia next year too. I like the development path he’s on. He’s playing meaningful minutes as a teen which is atypical in the K

Atlas is covering the deficiency's in his game pretty well. He has apparently still had some poor decision making defensively, but overall the balance of his play seems positive?

If I bring up the fact that he is a the only defenceman on the team with a negative +/- of -1 the ususal suspects will call for my head in this thread I guess.:sarcasm:

Before they do I should probably mention that he is 2nd on the team in defencemen scoring.

Stats : Players stats : 21/22 | regular : Kontinental Hockey League (KHL)

Reports coming from Ufa that he is negotiating a contract extension with SY Ufa.

:(

I was really hoping he'd make his way to NA in the next couple years, and be part of our competitive core starting 2023-2024-ish.
It could still happen because he might be signing a single year extension. Truth be told there is a bigger chance that he becomes real contributor for Devils if you let him polish his game at home, because AHL path rarely leads Russian kids to lengthy NHL career.

I was assuming he'd jump straight to the NHL, to be honest. I was under the impression he was already under contract in the KHL for next season? One more year in the KHL for certain, maybe even two, but long-term I think he could well be Luke Hughes' primary defensive partner (with Luke playing RHD like he is in college).

He is not even close to be ready to play in the NHL.

Salavat team's statement mentions that the loan will include next season too.

So 2022-2023 season in the KHL, then in the 2023-2024 season atleast 9 NHL games to see whats up. Like it. Gives him a lot of time to work on his weaknesses in his home country instead of rushing him.

Not sure what the 9 games have to do here though, as his contract won't slide anymore at that point.

KHL loans don't exist though!
Huh? You are confused. Nobody said that, ever. Loans to European leagues were always a thing.

Loans between the KHL clubs, not to the KHL clubs, were not allowed when KHL was created. Which probably has caused your misguided attempt to make some kind of the point.

I'm curious whether he will develop into a better Dman than Alexander Nikishin.....similar age, size and both scoring well in KHL.
They are completely different types. Scoring is not what Nikishin is known or praised for. Also saying they are the same size... are you being serious? One is 6'4" and 216lbs, the other 6'1" and 170lbs.

Loans to the KHL are common and natural. As NHL and KHL honor eachother's contracts there is no other way for players under the ELC for example to play in the KHL. And some do.

such a huge stink was made over NHL-KHL loans last year because Larry Brooks and Elliott Friedman said NHL teams had recall rights, so I just assumed they were purely fictional in their entirety.

ANYWAYS, this should be good for Shakir. Maybe they bring all their Russian babies over at the same time
