He kind look like Eric Gelinas. Hope he turns out better but I wouldn't expect him in the NHL in the near future (3+ years in the KHL should do the trick).
Yikes, tournament looks like it might be a little overwhelming for him..aside from these highlights, he’s been a turnover machine for Russia.
I have nothing against posting clips and making comments. But I have watched him very closely and I would completely disagree. He has actually looked quite good for the most part and has been surprisingly good defensively considering all the negativity. The turnovers have come at some unfortunate moments but they have not been nearly as frequent as you are making it out. Also the idea that its overwhelming is also silly. He regularly plays top minutes in the KHL as an 18 year old and has looked calm and collected in this tournament as well.
I can really see some real upside with him. Even many in this thread and the gdts have acknowledged he's looked good. I certainly notice him in good way more than Chayka, who is expected to go early 1st round next year and has been a highly touted prospect.
Again, nothing against your post. Just giving my humble opinion.
Passing is not a weakness of his.His weaknesses are his hockey IQ, passing game and playing defense. It is quite shockingly bad for a 20th overall pick. NJ is banking on his size and skating.
A boom or bust pick. Who knows, give him 4 seasons in the KHL and evaluate then if he has improved on his weaknesses.

Strange post. As an 18 year old, he was one of the best d-men on the ice against the US team. Sanderson probably made more errors in that game than Shakir did. You want to ignore that game, and just focus on the next one? I realize he had a few mishaps that game, but they were not massive blunders. If this is him struggling, then damn, the Devils got themselves a player.
In the warm up game against Canada, his stretch passes were the most dangerous part about the Russian team, so not sure how you say his passing is bad. And while he is overly creative in decision making sometimes, his 1:1 defence seems fine. Also seems to have a mean element to him.
Overall, reminds me of Vladimir Malakhov. Given the nature of hockey at the time, he didn't come over until his early 20's, but when he did, he was a force. I think if NJ is patient with Shakir and he wants to be in NA, they will have themselves a a helluva piece to a top 4.
Just strange you would watch those same games and think he is a poor passer. It's generally considered a strength in his scouting reports, and that has been obvious to me in watching him at the WJC. So strange you are watching the same games and think his passing is weak. "interesting" would be another optional word v "strange" I suppose. Why is it strange to you? I am giving you an analysis based on more than 8 matches I watched last year. Overall I like this kid but his weaknesses are clear and we need to be patient.
His passing has been terrific. The overall package of raw talent is very attractive. He is an 18 year old d man that is at the start of a long development curve. The hatred on the player is unwarranted and inaccurate. Why is it strange to you? I am giving you an analysis based on more than 8 matches I watched last year. The kid is still an 18 year old bean poll. At 23, he will be filled out, and still have his great skating, smarts, and passing skills. Imo this guy is going to be a very good top four NHL D by age 23.
This graph also shows defending against zone entriesIsn’t his selection of passing (especially on the breakout) one of his best qualities? I think he’s a very smart player, as demonstrated by his passing choices.
Insightful posts like this are why I visit this website. This kid has been terrible, i've only noticed him because he's so bad.
I've been watching the games and he has not been disappointing at all, com'on now people, this isn't the #1 overall draft pick, this poor kid is getting way too much hate. What a dumb take.Super underwhelming prospect and has been disappointing for Team Russia.
He has physics tools but thinks and processes the game at an incredibly low level.
No creativity or plan when has the puck, evident by the many slap shots he has buried into shin pads of the opponent.
He also plays hot potato w. The puck when he has it.
he is worth the risk if he was drafted maybe 5th round or later.
I’m cheering for Team Russia at this years WJC so I hope he turns it around.

First post too - ouch!
Calling him a 5th round talent is the dumbest thing I've read in this thread.IMO this is one of the worst Dcore that Russia has iced for the WJC in maybe a decade and SM isn’t even one of the best for the team. That says a lot.
