Takes a ton of maturity.

Considering if he heart was in it, the potential for an NHL career was definitely there for him.

Good luck with what's next Ryan! :)

Wow, maybe this was one of the reasons behind his massive slide in the draft.

I have to think this was a reason. Definitely why the pre-draft process exists.

I wish him the best. Takes a lot of maturity to admit your heart isn't in it. Hopefully he finds happiness in whatever he pursues.

Stefan Legein did this too and came back. All is not lost Isles fans.

Good luck to Ryan in his future endeavors.

Wow I was not expecting this I loved his shot.... I saw tons of potential in him
Best of luck for whatever it is ahead
Sucks for isle fans.... Maybe he pulls an legein
Except ending up being successful...

Unfortunate, but I have the utmost respect for the kid standing up and admitting that his heart was not into it. He stepped away at a young enough age where it won't effect his career path too much. Best of luck to the kid in his future endeavors.

That was the first thing I thought of, too. If he steps away in his late-20s or early-30s, then what? At least now he's just 19 years old and can easily step back into school and pursue something he'll enjoy and make a good career out of.

All respect to him for making this decision.

Unfortunate that this is the case. Best of luck to him in whatever he decides to do with his life whether it's hockey again or something else.

I was very sad to hear this today. Remember watch Ryan back at the Macs Midget when he was a member of the Beardys Blackhawks. He had a very good WHL career and had a ton of potential. I hope he uses his 4 years of WHL Tuition money to get a degree.

I have a lot of respect for this decision. He could have strung the Isles out on talent alone, got a couple of pay checks, and then quit.

My faith in humanity was restored when I noticed this thread was devoid of useless speculation and other nonsense.

Way to go, HF.

Hope the kid finds happiness.

As an Islanders fan I say this announcement is like 3 month to late. I wonder how much being picked in the 5th instead of the 2nd affected his choice

Probably why he fell, isles took a chance that he might change his mind

Yeh, he had questions raised about his 'intensity' and 'compete level' before the combine... then showed up at the combine and had the worst body fat %, was worst in the agility tests and was bottom 10% in virtually every test, despite being a pretty good athlete on the ice.

Combo of the two was why he fell.

His heart was obviously just not in it.

Hopefully it's something like he wants to pursue some dreams, see the world and maybe get back into hockey. We're not all from the same mold.

Definitely the right choice of his heart's not in it, he can still go to college at a pretty normal age.

Side note, he's going to be an unreal beer league player.

Very talented. I was a fan. He could have been in the NHL and made millions. Gotta be true to himself. Wish him the best of luck going forward.
