Seems to have happened to a lot of players. The draft, after the first round, has been willy-nilly compared to the predraft rankings.

It's a deep draft, predraft rankings beyond the first round don't really represent how close these later decisions actually have been.

"Granted, the Brandon defenceman didn’t have a lot of prep time after the Wheat Kings’ elimination in the WHL final, but still, teams would like to see a little more athleticism that Pilon put on display.

Ranked No. 24 among North American skaters by Central Scouting, Pilon was dead last in body fat measurement and dead last in the cumulative measure in the agility tests. In fact, if you looked across the board you were almost guaranteed to find him in the bottom 10 percent, even in power rather than endurance tests.

Again, I suspect that Pilon was giving it the old college try and had to be more banged up than he owned up to. And I also suspect that one bad result snowballed into another—knowing he was having a bad day at the showcase could not have been fun.

A big asterisk attached to this one."

Player development people see that and say.... what if we got him on a proper diet plan? The kid is already a top pairing two way defenseman on the best team in the dub.....

If the kid wants it bad enough and puts the work in, he could end up making tremendous strides in his game. To say that about someone that is already ranked highly....

This.

Lifestyle changes and attitude towards living like an athlete are things that can be taught. If lack of athleticism of an 18 year old is your only worry I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Read my reports. Not overly surprised.

A major lack of intensity.

funny i actually think the opposite, i think hes overrated just because of his point total

Me too.

His points/size combination point to future success based on past drafts but there are just other things about his game that I have seen over the last couple of years which I don't like.

He lacks intensity in his game both defensively and physically.

Unless he picks that up, I don't see him being a future NHL player.

#RIP
still tho i was surprised by how much he dropped

DraftBuzz ranked 111.

This index plus other combination factors explain why he fell.

Essentially, from that index, he had the 10th lowest post draft upside rated against the rest of the field of the DraftBuzz top 210 ranking.

5 of that top 10 went undrafted, 1 had a higher draft selection than consensus (Meier), 1 had a neutral selection vs. consensus (Andersson). Pilon, Timashov, Wilkie went lower for most tastes.

Maybe that's why he fell so late in the draft. Didnt show he was passionate and teams noticed that. Still too bad, even though I wasn't a fan, he still was quite talented.

Good for him if he doesn't want to play he shouldn't be forced to. But it does suck that a person so talented (3rd overall WHL pick) didn't have the passion for it. I know of tons of people who have such a drive for hockey that if they had Pilons talent they could've made the show.

It's too bad. I wish him all the best and I hope he finds something that re-ignites his passion and makes him happy in lieu of playing hockey.

Ryan Pilon Quitting Hockey.

The Brandon Wheat Kings have lost a key member of their blue-line with veteran Ryan Pilon stepping away from the team.

The team opened its main camp on Friday without the three-year Western Hockey League veteran, who will turn 19 next month.

"Ryan came to me this week and told me that at this time he has lost his passion to play hockey and will be leaving the team," said Kelly McCrimmon, the team's coach and general manager.

"We had a number of discussions, but his final decision was that this was what he felt he needed to do," he added.

Figured it's worth it's own thread, wow.

Unfortunate, but I have the utmost respect for the kid standing up and admitting that his heart was not into it. He stepped away at a young enough age where it won't effect his career path too much. Best of luck to the kid in his future endeavors.
