Can't force yourself to be passionate about something you're not. Even if he had the talent and saw the $$$ signs he still wouldn't have made it off talent alone so better stop now then ride the buses in the A

I wonder what are some other examples of this besides Daigle

CLB drafted a winger several years ago that quit hockey for a couple of years and was delivering pizza . He tried to come back after two years. Can't remember his name

Stefan Legein. He wasn't successful coming back. It's very hard to come back if your heart isn't in it.

Would there be a way for New York to get a compensation pick from this, even though he was just a 5th rounder? Just wondering because this is kind of an unusual occurrence, he didn't sign an elc, right?

Nope. A lot of drafted players don't sign ELC's and are lost by teams when their rights expire. Sucks for the Isles that this happened but they shouldn't get a compensatory pick from it.

My faith in humanity was restored when I noticed this thread was devoid of useless speculation and other nonsense.

Way to go, HF.

Hope the kid finds happiness.

Only because this move has not shocked many people who were paying attention to the lead up of the draft. There had been speculation prior to the draft that the kid thought his future was elsewher

I wonder how people would react if this was a 1st rounder, or even better, a top ten pick.

Unsigned 1st rounders get compensatory pick in the 2nd round. More specifically, 1) becomes eligible for draft again, 2) unrestricted free agent, or 3) dies.

If your scout couldn't tell he wasn't interested and picked him in the top 10, scouting and GM heads are going to roll. This situation wasn't like that - it was apparent to even the internet community pre-draft that there were motivation issues.

I understand why you get compensatory for 1st rounder - they're actually worth something. By the time you get a 5th round, 6th round picks are almost lottery tickets and extremely low probability of success.

I doubt the Islanders get compensated, and if this were known to his WHL team (which seems like the case), I'm sure it was known at the draft. They took a gamble and lost. Thankfully it was still a good draft for them, and it was only a 5th rounder.

It would not matter at all. The NHL operates in two free countries. Players are free to sell their labour, or not, for whatever reason they choose. The draft is just a way to allocate talent with an aim to competitiveness and parity. If a player decides to quit, or retire, oh well, that's his right.

That seems to be the case.

He slid in the draft because people "in the know" knew this was a possibility.

But then their comes a point, where his upside was worth the risk. The NYI drafted a 2nd rd talent in the 5th rd but the risk was he might quit. They gambled and lost. Personally, I think it was worth the risk.

Precisely. I'm thinking it just got to the point where they figured the odds of him deciding to retire were lower than the odds of their next best pick busting, at which point it makes sense to take him.

Was it Papa John?

Some of the posts about lack of passion and physical play had me for a moment checking to see if this was a Griff thread.

Sucks. I really thought he was a steal. He just doesn't seem to have the passion for the game. This bump got me excited.

Thing that really sucks is we basically traded our 5th round pick this year to get the pick we used to draft him. Would have been nice to know then he planned on going semi retirement.

I'm sure when the Islanders picked Pilon that they knew he was considering stepping away. There was no way he was getting out of the 3rd round without some serious concerns being found in the interviews.

They either didn't interview him, or knew of it and figured he was worth the risk if he ended up continuing with his career. From all I've been told, he has some serious talent.

He was the Muzzin to Provorov's Doughty. I thought he was a good pickup before his retirement. Was almost mad the Islanders were the ones to get him

Hes only played in 13 games.

Interesting though, the top 10 scorers in the league are pretty much 2ppg.

A guy drafted 3rd overall in the WHL draft and quits hockey 3 years later is pretty surprising( especially if he was doing pretty damn good). I wonder what happened along his journey to made him lose his passion for hockey. Probably would have been around ppg in the whl this year.
