LD Rasmus Sandin - Rogle BK, SHL (2018, 29th, TOR)

I've been following this thread for a few days now, and I'm so confused. Why in the world are Leafs fans getting so offended and defensive? I get it if a guy starts bashing on a player with no apparent reason except for a bias (which happens to Bouchard, and annoys me). But @The Winter Soldier literally said that he likes Sandin and thinks he'll become a 2nd pairing defensemen. Whats wrong with that? And then saying his opinion is worthless? Then he posted a detailed shift by shift description, and you guys ignore it and say that he cherrypicked Sandin's worst couple games. Players have bad games. Get over it. Sandin will most likely become a stud for you guys. Stop tearing apart people who have slightly different opinions than you do.

He has also had little to say about Sandin, while he was playing extremely well, but coincidentally enough starts posting after a couple games where he struggled somewhat. It is easy to pull the, "I really like the player but...." nonsense as a pre-cursor to your real agenda.

7 of his 10 points came in the first 5 play-off games, against Rockford and Cleveland.
Last 8 games, 0+3 and +/-: -7 against Cleveland and Charlotte

Complete opposite what to regular season: in the last 17 reg games Sandin scored 19 points -> 9 points in his first 27 reg games.

So, late reg+early play-offs, 26 points in 22 games.

Relatively good/great rookie season, but streaky, lots of room to improve, still super young thou, so that should be easy for him
good enough for the Leafs line up next season?, maybe Leafs fans could answer this question?

Giordano, Hedman and Burns are the three Norris finalists.

In Giordano's last 4 games he was 0+1 -4; Hedman was 0+0, -3 in his last 3 games and Burns was 0+1 -4 in his last 3 games.

That is 2 assists and -11 in 10 games between the 3 of them. Sandin was playing the kind of minutes they were. Things happen. Sandin had a tremendous WJC and between the regular season and playoffs played at a 55 point pace and was the top minute D in the second half of the season and playoffs for a team that didn't look like it would make the playoffs in the first half of the season, yet turned it on in the second half when Sandin forced his way into the 1D position, and made it to the third round again in large part due to the play of young players like Sandin. He turned 19 in March. But any measure it was ridiculously great rookie season. He is good enough to make the Leafs in the fall. That doesn't mean that he will. But I don't think that he has anything left to prove in the AHL (I can't say the same for Liljegren, who has not yet put together a decent stretch of offensive production in the AHL - Something Dermott did last season before being called up, and Rosen and Sandin did this season).

Will be interesting to see where Sandin/Liljegren rank in the upcoming drafted prospects list that are bound to come out this summer.

Sandin in particular should take a huge leap.

I thought Lilly has looked really good these playoffs aside from game 2 or 3 this series. Sandin wasn’t as effective this series, but is probably better and more polished than Lilly was last year in his d+1. Last year, Lilly was effective at tilting the ice but was sort of erratic in the playoffs against weaker competition in more limited minutes. This year, he was calm, efficient, and played a really effective, lower risk game. Sandin was trying to make plays but probably could use experience to pick his spots better like Dermott.

I think Sandin could become a pretty good offensive 2 if all goes well, whereas Lilly looks like a Stralman that won’t takeover games but won’t look out of place supporting a Reilly type on the top pair. I hope I’m underselling their potential, but I’m probably way too optimistic as a leafs fan...

I really like your Stralman/Liljegren comparison, hopefully this time the Leafs are patient enough to see it through.

If everything goes right with Sandin, I see him as a Roman Josi type, so far pre/post draft they are tracking similarly.

Dang...would Steen, Stralman, and Rask have become the players they did if we never traded them?

I haven’t had a chance to really see Josi play but if he’s as good as everyone says he is, I hope you’re right!!

Liljegren had 27 shifts to Sandin’s 26 and Veillete has Liljegren with more TOI. Not sure what you being at game 3 & 4 has to do with his minutes in game 5.
Where did you see that Jeffler had Lilly with more TOI. I believe you but can't find it.

Now that his season is complete i have to say i'm happy with how well he initially transitioned to pro hockey and even happier with how his game grew throughout the year.
He far exceeded my expectations.

He didn't and it wasn't Jeffler, it was Kevin Papetti on Twitter.

In a follow up to his tweet about Sandin with 25:42 of icetime a fan asked if he had a comparison between Lil/Sandin, he responded that Lil played 4-5 minutes less that particular night.

He's arguably been the Leafs best D thru 2 games.

His poise with the puck along with his passing ability are going to make him a good pro.

This is one prospect that isnt getting anywhere near the helium that he should be.

Will need to get stronger but he's not far from being able to play regularly and very well could be ready.

Has alot of Kaberle in his game.

It's fine he can stay underrated. You should've seen the meltdowns by some people when he cracked the top 30 prospects on this board.

Everybody on the prospect board is to busy ****ting on Liljegren to notice Sandin. That is fine though.
Loved his game last night against the Rochester Sabres.Great poise excellent skating and passing.Hope he plays tonight against a more established group. My only complaint was leaf announcers gushing over him it was embarrassing. If it wasn't for the numbers on D I would say he is ready though looked very poised.

I think it is an entirely separate group going for the Leafs tonight. So Barrie and Muzzin on defense and the Tavares line up front and then whatever else is left over. He should stick around later into camp though and get his chances against better lineups then last night.

Babcock’s overall opinion on Sandin:
“All you have to do is watch,” says Mike Babcock of Sandin, one of Toronto’s two young Swedish defenceman. “He’s smart. He knows how to play, he’s got a feel, he’s one of these guys that it doesn’t seem to matter how old he is, because his hockey sense is so good. He sees it. He’s a little guy who seems to know how to defend. He seems to know how to leverage his body. He just seems to be a good player.
Babcock on Sandin’s composure:
“And the other thing about him, when you talk to him, he doesn’t get all uptight. He’s just, oh, OK, yeah. Or knows what you’re going to say before you say it, most of the time.”
Arthur included this great observation: [Babcock] likes guys you don’t have to worry about.
Sandin: “I mean, that’s one of my strengths, trying to be calm, both on and off the ice,” he says with practised ease. “I think I’m a pretty mature kid, and I want to be that on and off the ice.”

Hell, even as a Leaf fan I get sick of announcers gushing over players lol I in general like a more neutral approach to calling games.

I like how both Lily and Sandin have looked, both have different games, both will be solid going forward.

Sandin in my opinion will be pretty special, so I am a tad higher on him, but not in a way to diminish Lily.

It will be kinda cool to see the battle of the Rasmus's lol (Buff and Tor)

Honest question, why did Sandin fall to 29? He dominated the AHL as a 18yr old and is impressing now and is pushing himself onto the Leaf roster. How did 28 other teams miss this guy?

Pretty lackluster reason but he played for an absolutely stacked OHL team which resulted in some people feeling his point totals were inflated.

Certainly, as LD said, playing on a stacked team had something to do with do with it. But another reason is that he is small, he is not very fast, from a physical standpoint he just doesn't look like a potential NHL D.
