LD Rasmus Sandin - Rogle BK, SHL (2018, 29th, TOR)

Strongly disagree. Hockey sense is probably the first thing a professional scout would look at when evaluating a player. It may be overlooked by fans but definitely not by NHL scouts.

I don't dispute that an attempt is made, it's the ability to identify it that I question. ~90% of prospect scouting reports I've ever read contain praise of the individual's hockey sense. It's basically a throw-in compliment at this point. Very rarely does a report actually breakdown the subtleties that demonstrate intelligence, anticipation, risk assessment & mitigation, appreciation of passing/shooting lanes etc.

Did he get hurt? He had 10 mins of icetime in the game, the least of any player on either team.

This was a tune up game for the main roster. All of the top 4 played in this game, and got the kind of ice time they'll get in the regular season. That didn't leave much for the third pair.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sandin plays in both of the remaining preseason games this weekend vs Detroit.

The 28th and 29th picks of the 2018 NHL draft could wind up producing two really good RHD.

I don't have access to real NHL scouting reports and I'm guessing the ones you are referring to are not from actual NHL scouts either. Writers and fans (Pronman, Wheeler, scouting services made up of college students etc.) will every year spit out articles of how elite the kids are but they have no say whatsoever when it comes to the draft and they don't have the resources either to do a very good job.

15 months later and he is about to be one of the youngest dmen in the NHL
bad take man
Dosnt that say more about the teams (Leafs) d-core, though? Or is the preseason a good meassurement for a player?..

Just like Björnfot had a hard time playing in the SHL just a couple of months ago, but suddenly lights up the Kings preaseason, you have to take some things with a grain of salt. Or maybe LA Kings defense is that bad.

The Leafs defense isnt bad though lol

He's surprised me.

He struggled defensively at times last year in the AHL, so I didn't think he'd be ready for the NHL, but he's taken some solid strides over the summer. Definitely like the skillset and ceiling I'm seeing out of him, especially with it largely rooted in being an intelligent player.

The preseason is not a good measure for a player. But we don't have to rely on his preseason. We can look at his performance last year. We can look at the scouting reports from last year. We can look at Shilton's coverage of the pre-camp skates where she raved about Sandin. We can look at what the coaches and players have said about him. Mid March I said he would be on the Leafs' roster opening night. The same post I said that Liljegren wouldn't play a game in the NHL this year. Those who have been surprised by this development either weren't paying attention (which is fine) or were playing attention to people who shouldn't be listened to.

He has also jumped up significantly in draft redo's and lists of top prospects not in the NHL.
