LD Rasmus Sandin - Rogle BK, SHL (2018, 29th, TOR)

Hard not to get excited. This is what winning teams do. He plays another year in the AHL and Muzzin likely walks as a UFA. Dermott becomes 2nd pair LD and Sandin takes over the third pairing. I think eventually the defense is going to be something like

Rielly - Dermott
Sandin - Liljegren

Which is a pretty modern, mobile D core.

His development has been amazing this season, I can see him or liljegren maybe getting a couple games in for the end of the season

Not likely. If he or Liljegren play more than 9 games this year, it burns a year of their ELC and makes them eligible for the Seattle expansion draft.

Rielly, Dermott (on a new deal) are locks to be protected. Playing one of them now wastes that last spot and flexibility going into the expansion draft, especially if they acquire a RHD this summer that will be protected in 2021.

I agree with your reasoning as to why they wouldn't likely get more than 9 games... but a couple isn't nine or more.....

Are you sure about the expansion draft eligibility?? Nylander played more than 9 games and we didn't have to protect him...

Nylander had played two seasons. If Sandin plays 9+ games this year it would give him 3 years by the time of the expansion draft.

The thing about calling them up is that once they actually get playing time in the NHL they'll impress everyone and if the leafs send them down after 9 games the fans would riot because they wouldn't be able to stand the fact that we have two very good young defenseman much better than Hainsey and Zaitsev and they're sitting in the minors cause Babcock is for some reason in love with Z and Hainsey

I'd love to see Liljegren and Sandin getting some NHL time. I'm sure they'd do better than Zaitsev or Hainsey. Sweden really is putting out great defensemen one after another, aren't they? Getting a little jelly.

Sandin ties Voynov's record for most points by an 18 year old D in AHL history, with 23.

Maybe a stupid question but hasn't he been 19 the last few games and therefore didn't break the record? Obviously coming close in the lesser number of games is still mad impressive but.. Yeah

You look at how old the player was when the season started. By that logic, Voynov was 19 by January 15 in the season he set the record. In other words, he was a couple of months older than Sandin during the same time span.

Oh well then people should say U19 season instead of "as an 18 yr old d"

This makes no sense at all. You just wanted to inject Babcock vitriol at any means.

Didn’t he surpass Voynov’s point totals as an 18yr old as well?
Not yet, he could though. 4 points away. In terms of PPG he is blowing him out of the water.

Sandin and Liljegren are actually 1st and 2nd in terms of PPG in their 18 year old seasons.

He's matched his 18yr old season (23pts).

I was talking, in reference to the other poster's point, his literal "while 18yrs old", which is the context of that discussion. Given he's blowing him out of the water in PPG, I'd assume the answer to that is yes as well.

Ah yes I would assume he would be well ahead of anybody there.

Babcock loves Hainsey and Zaitsev and overplays them way too much. We have four better top 4 options but Babcock still plays them in top minutes. Yeah they're decent penalty killers, but they should be getting the 5th and 6th most even strength ice time, not the most. We traded a first rounder and two of our top prospects for Muzzin and in a healthy lineup Babs has him on the third pair. Don't try and defend babcock for those decisions, it's pretty obvious he doesn't know the abilities of his defenceman. whether you care about the eye test, advanced stats, or just goals assists, Hainsey and Zaitsev are two of the worst top 4 defenders in the league

Didn’t read your post. I’m not defending Babcock. I’m just saying it should stay in a Babcock thread. This is a Sandin thread. Coincidence Leafs just lose and you come back to this  Not enough threads for you to foam at the mouth in?

This guy is gonna be such a perfect addition next year but honestly not high on Liljgren like some people. Not sure why cause honestly I was higher on him than Sandin before this year and now it went 360. Sandin looks like a stud leafs fans will love and Liljgren looks like a solid 3rd pair that will be eaten by Toronto fans. Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin LD is drool worthy not go fix the right side
