LD Rasmus Sandin - Rogle BK, SHL (2018, 29th, TOR)

Sandin's currently 5 points away from breaking Slava Voynovs record for most points by an 18 year old D in AHL history (23 points) - Voynov took 61 games to do that, while Sandin is only in game 34...

Sandman also has 1 less point in 1 more game than Kevin Fiala (forward) had in his 18 year old AHL season. He also has 2 more points in 10 less games than Liljegren had last season, who set records himself.

I really wanted Sandin at the draft, was happy we picked him, and very happy to see him doing so well with the Marlies. I hate comparing own prospects, but he has passed Liljegren already IMO.

Yeah I had him around 20 in the draft, and didn't think he was going to make it to us. When we were announcing our pick at 29, I only had Calen Addison + Akil Thomas left ahead of him; so yeah I was pretty excited when Dubas picked him. Mad when Addison was passed over for Durzi, but whatever...

I think he's ahead of Liljegren at this point only because his season has exceeded everyone's expectations by faaaar, where as Liljegren has "only" been fantastic. Both have to be close to top-10 NHL affiliated defensive prospects at this point.

I don't pit personal prospects against each other and I am very high on Liljegren. But at this point, Sandin has to be considered better, even marginally. Very mature defensively and he's putting up the offence too.

Sandin ties Voynov's record for most points by an 18 year old D in AHL history, with 23.

In 25 less games.

This will turn out to be one of the Leafs' best value picks in recent memory. The only teenager i've seen as confident as Sandin in the AHL is Nylander; he controls everything on the ice. You have 30+ year old vets like Loverde, Mueller, etc. who take orders from a 19 year old on where to stand out there. He dictates the entire game.

If the Seattle expansion wasn't happening, I think he'd be given a shot if someone got hurt.

Problem is they can't have him be eligible for that draft.
