LD Luke Hughes (2021, 4th, NJD)

Good thing that people that actually make these kind of decisions watch the actual sport that these guys are playing. Good grief, did you see what happened with Chayka and all the other analytically driven clowns?

Many of Chayka’s moves were not well supported by publicly available analytics. His reputation as a stats guy is overstated.

Quinn vs Luke, Freshman years through 17 games played

Quinn: 17gp, 1g, 9a, 10pts, +8
Luke: 17gp, 7g, 9a, 16pts, +17

(on power play, both had 1g, 2a)

What has made Luke so much better than Quinn has been
(1) shooting....7 goals on 36 shots (Quinn had one goal on 40 shots)
(2) defense...Luke has been on ice for only 6 even strength goals against this year
(3) just a better team

Not a full picture, or best apples-to-apples, but interesting nonetheless.

I'd have to say more than anything the team is a majority of Luke being "better". This years team is an absolute monster. With obvious high picks in Power, Berniers, Johnson, and Hughes with 3 of them being sophomores who are just playing well above what they have last year. I admittedly don't remember Quinn on U of M so I'm not sure how to compare their shots but maybe Luke's shot is just more polished than Quinn's was at that age. Maybe Luke plays more of a give and go style than Quinn where Quinn likes to hold and control play more which would open Luke up for more goal opportunities.

What’s the primary vs secondary assist comparison? I think Luke only has 2

The most obvious thing that I forget to mention, that Quinn's Freshman season was BEFORE his draft, and he was already pegged as a future top-10 pick, so a lot of people were following him closely. He started the season off a little slowly, but picked it back up after World Juniors.

Luke has better teammates...and the team has more fitting style of play (more possession, fewer shots, but better scoring chances).

Does Mel Pearson have any real track record of developing all around defensmen? I understand Power is an exceptional talent and Quinn was great offensively upon arrival. I worry they let him do "Luke Hughes" and never really harness his abilities, much like how Jack Johnson was developed.

Those are my concerns as well . However I don’t know all that much about Pearson to know for sure

Keep the points coming kid !
I’d like to see him in the 1st pairing but no way he bumps Power down and I can’t see them using Luke on the left side / disrupt their current pairings ?
Ideally I’d like to eventually see him be 1st pair and PP1/ PP2 plus on a PK unit. Or used in all situations , up or down one goal with coupe minutes left in a game. I can’t see that happen this season but hopefully next year he will .

Maybe he gets his chance during the Olympics, if Power joins Team Canada's hockey team for the upcoming games.

Hughes' high-end skating leads to a chance in the slot which Duke finishes. A few minutes later he prevents a breakaway chance by outpacing the opposition forward in transition.

Luke has been phenomenal this season, I really can't say enough good things about his game.
