Bad trade then, which most of us said at the time, and it remains bad now. It's likely to look alot uglier in 3-5 years. Still have no idea what Chiarelli was thinking.

Reinhart moves like his skates are made of granite.

TERRIBLE trade.

Not to mention Boston not taking Barzal with those 3 picks is just as brutal.

I remember thinking at one time that all 3 Reinhart brothers would be full time NHLers.

Probably looking at what pick was used to take Griffin Reinhart than Reinhart himself. It happens...GMs want to believe they can change a player by changing their environment.

Philly gave up JvR straight up for Schenn because he was a fifth overall pick and they were desperate for any D at that time.

It was horrible when it happened and somehow has gotten worse. Reinhart is a pylon.

Didn't the guy that pushed for Reinhart on the Islanders also recommend Reinhart to the Oilers? Not too head scratching if that is the case.
I assume you are talking about Bob Green? This trade has his hands all over it. He was the Oil Kings GM when Reinhart was on the team and joined the Oilers in 2013 as Director of Amateur Scouting. He got promoted to his current position of Director of Player Personnel a few months before Chiarelli's arrival. When Keith Gretzky was hired as Assistant GM this summer I think some of Green's influence might have been taken away. If it was I would hope the Reinhart debacle is why.

Win some lose some. I doubt fans could do much better in the long run as everything said here is in hindsight.

Chiarelli could have had Zaitsev for free but gives up Hall for Larsson. Guy doesn't know how to evaluate dmen. Ie. Boychuk to the Islanders for scraps....

Players brought in by/drafted by Chia: McDavid (easy pick), Talbot, Maroon, Larsson, Sekera, Lucic, Versteeg, Caggiula, Kassian, Grbya.

As for someone mentioning Zaitsev, Chia drafted Ziyat Paigin (check out his KHL stats last year). Picked up Niemailainen this draft as well.

I applaud the overall direction we are heading it.

Agreed. We could've stuck with keeping Hall and just stack things up with forwards without bringing in a higher calibre defenseman because it's worked so well in recent years :sarcasm:

The problem with this trade and plenty of Oilers fans said the same thing too is that they seem to have just ignored his development in New York, and citing his time as an Oil King. Likely thought it was the Islanders' fault and they could fix his development given what they saw in junior, not pro.

It recently came to my attention that the 2015 draft day trade that sent Griffen Reinhart to the Oilers in exchange for their 1st and 2nd round picks could have ended up being Kyle Connor and Sebastien Aho. As it occured, the Islanders selected Matthew Barzal and Mitchell Stephens, both great prospects in their own right, but it just strikes me that regardless of who the Oilers would have hypothetically selected this trade was absolutely terrible. While we can't know at this point how well any of these players will develop, Reinhart looks like a career AHLer at this point while the Oilers missed a great chance to surround McDavid with more great young talent.

While we can't tell you what these players will look like, I'm going to tell you what I think this player looks like.

because Larsson is better than Zaitsev

also, Larsson+Lucic>>Hall+Zaitsev

pretty funny you think he doesn't know d-men...who did he bring into Boston? Chara, Boychuk initially, Ference in his prime, sign Tory Krug as a FA, Dennis Seidenberg

heck his basically built a Stanley Cup winning blueline

as for the trade..it was awful then and awful now but I'm guessing Chiagot some bad advice from previous management who were so high on him they actually considered taking him #1 in 2012

Funny that his dad was known for his speed and yet his sons Griffin and Max Reinhart move like molasses. I don't think Sam is too fleet of foot as well from what I've seen.

Islanders fans were in love with this guy until we got rid of him. Now they will tell you he suxs and will never make the NHL. Back then then they were billing him as a top pairing D-man. He just doesn't skating ability or the hockey IQ.

I actually think he's pretty smart...but he's got heavy boots and timid as they come

plus not a lick of offense to make up for his deficiencies

Reinhart is a good prospect. But he probably went too high in the draft. The mistake here was obvious. Passing up on Barzal or Connor, or even trading down to try to get Konecny. The Isles also kept Pulock in their system. I would have preferred him over Reinhart. Lots of second guessing here. Not only now, but at the time of the deal.

Some trades you know are bad at the time. That describes the Reinhart trade. You don't trade for a player who at that age still has problems with his skating.
I also said that the Seguin trade was bad at the time and I feel that way about the Hall trade as well.
Strangely enough all three of those trades were made by Chia. Having said that, he has made some outstanding trades as well.

Overall, I think he's an overrated GM. Not the worst but just too many terrible trades that were obviously bad on the day they were made.

The same will happen with Michael Dal Colle. Hopefully the Isles get a steal of a return for that bust.

That's simply not true. Isles fans were starting to turn against him in the season before he was traded. That's when the reports of him not progressing started and when fans started looking for possible trades.

Didn't even want to post in this thread... But it was well reported on NYI boards by Bridgeport fans that Reinhart was being surpassed by Adam Pelech. Pelech had the same knock as Reinhart coming out of junior hockey. Why would anyone think that NYI could help Pelech but not Reinhart?

NYI fans were also reticent to believe that they had another top-5 pick on their hand that was going to end up a wasted asset. (Nino being the first, despite what NYI have gotten out of Cal Clutterbuck.) Getting what NYI got for him, made NYI fans much happier to believe the evidence that Reinhart was going to bust.

Add to this a third thing. Reinhart was on the cusp of making the Islanders in 2014. And then NYI traded for Boychuk and Leddy. Those trades really seem to be the turning points in Reinhart's career. Everything I've seen of him since then screams to me that he's lost his confidence, which explains why he's making decisions slowly. He was so conservative on the Oilers in the beginning of last season it was painful. And then I saw him live against he Islanders and he was trying to be more decisive and assertive, and it was just hard to watch. I hope he's somehow able to restore some confidence. Because I don't see any reason that he shouldn't be able to have a long NHL career.

That trade was such typical Chiarelli.

Made a move for the sake of making a move.
