He asked me about a dozen questions about the two the other day on Twitter, comparing them and naming their pros and cons. They're somewhat similar but have different sets of positives and negatives.

Rielly is a better skater and is much more well rounded.

Pouliot is a bit more fiesty and is a better passer of the puck.

That I did.

RG: what kind of upcoming do you expect both to have, assuming they are both back in the WHL?

Im not too familar with the squads, although I assume Portland will be strong as they always seem to be.

Still think the Pens should have taken Forsberg at 8

They probably wish they took Forsberg too now considering that Maatta dropped to them at 22

We will soon find out in a few years. To be very honest and I said it plenty of times when it happened and on the Pens board, I was 110% sure they were going to pick Forsberg at the time of the trade. We will soon find out

Portland will be excellent again and I fully expect Pouliot to play on their top pairing with Seth Jones. We'll see how they decide to do that though as they still have a good squad on the blueline. I could see him putting up similar point numbers to last year, just because I don't think the team will be quite as good offensively next season as they were the last two years.

Moose Jaw will also take a step back, losing a TON of talent like Braes, Henry, McIlrath, Howden, etc. Also will be lacking in goal after trading Luke Siemens to PA in the offseason. Rielly will be counted on big time and they won't be as good offensively, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Rielly still post a 55 point-ish season with 14 or 15 goals. He'll be counted on to PK and stuff more than Pouliot will, so I could see his numbers being a bit lower overall.

Thanks for the reference. How far back could Moose Jaw fall? Is it possible we see Rielly moved to a contender?

I think it really depends on goaltending. That's been a concern of there's for 2-3 years now and it burned them last year against Edmonton, eventually having to turn to a 16 year old to try and save them in the playoffs. It didn't work.

If they get off to a slow start and aren't getting goaltending I think it's possible that they will end up as a borderline playoff time. I still think they'll end up as a 5 or 6 seed. If they are any worse than that they might consider trading him, but I highly doubt it comes to that.

You never know, though.

Look, I wanted Forsberg as much as anyone. I was at the draft and was in shock at the pick.

That said, Goligoski, the guy whom got the Pens Neal AND Niskanen, went in the second round. Letang went in the third round. I remember when Goligoski was drafted there was a lot of 'who the hell is that?' on our board. It is way too early to make sweeping judgments. Shero does seem to know how defensive prospects.

Pouliot is a good offensive d-man that will probably get around 50 points per year. 2nd pairing d-man.

I believe it was a mistake of passing over Forsberg for Pouliot though. Forsberg in my opinion was by far the BPA and would fill a much bigger need.

50pts a year? Lol
50pts a year as a 2nd pairing guy?

People throw.around 50pt Dmen a lot around here... As if they were a dine a dozen.

did Morrow over-hype Pouliot?

Not even remotely close. Pens had scouts watching Morrow and when they are watching him, if there are any guys that are going into the draft, on the same team...they'd watch that person too and so they probably saw Pouliot. The only thing Morrow did was tell them after they decided to pick Pouliot, what kind of person he was.

Shero wasn't around when the Pens drafted either of them.

Sure, but that doesn't erase the starkness of his problems, or the fact his biggest weakness is something that cant be taught...size. His struggles were blatent out there.

Certainly looks to be a bigger project than was necessary for an 8th pick, esp considering the impact it has on the outcome of the staal deal.

Erik Karlsson is what 6'5" 6'6"?

He didn't say that he was.

I can't wait for another year of Pouliot in PDX. Hopefully he'll play well enough to silence some of the Forsberg caterwauling from the Pens board.
