Penguins finally did what I have been hoping they would do for several weeks: call up Derrick Pouliot and give him an unbridled chance. This kid very well may be a bust, but I think that's on the organization. Pouliot came out of the draft as a top prospect, and showed amazing development over his draft +1 and +2 years. But now, in his draft +5 year, the majority of the chances he has got at the NHL level were under Johnston's cloying system, and however much I wish to, it's hard not to commiserate with him for letting his foot off of his own gas pedal.
Last night against the hawks, in 15 minutes of ice time, I thought he was one of the best defence men on the ice. He finished with a plus/minus of zero, but not for lack of trying. NHL.com reports he had zero shots on net, but I don't think that's true. He sent several beautiful tipping chances towards the net, and in a scramble, almost beat Darling upstairs. His passing was crisp; the only turnover I saw was when he shoved it around the boards, but then proceeded to power forward and knock the opposing player off of the puck. He didn't hesitate to join the rush, and he was aggressive enough to attempt two breakaway, 150 foot passes, both of which were almost successful. Defensively, he stripped several players, was strong along the boards, and was positionally sound.
I have no idea what Pittsburgh was doing establishing a defensive depth chart of Letang-Dumo-Schultz-Daley-Maatta-Cole-Hainsey-Streit-Corrado when Ruhwedel was playing well, but I actually hope injuries keep ONE spot open for Pouliot to at least close out the regular season with the club, giving him invigoration for his summer training. I, for one, still believe he can become a regular top-4 blue liner.
