He reminds me of a better skating Seabrook at times. I think he could have a smiling NHL career too. Anyone see this or feel this way?

His skating is good for a guy his size but it isn't as good as Nurses/Myers.

No that's true, but he's still very good on the transition, as he can either skate the puck out of his own zone himself or make a solid outlet pass, much like I would imagine Nurse in the NHL. Both are very physical with limited offensive IQ.

A better-skating Bogosian is certainly the best comparison I can think of at this point.

Is Seabrook that mean or aggressive though?

Yes imo he is. But Seabrook is also more mature which obviously comes with age and experience which to me makes him look less mean because he's not getting in players faces and taunting them.

I don't think Seabrook is a good comparison. Honestly, there aren't many players like Nurse that I can think of. Seabrook to me is much more of a steady, reliable type with a better shot. Nurse's combination of skating, size, and aggression is rare. Seabrook plays with some aggression and physicality, but different mentality. Nurse wants everything in sight to be flat on the ice. He's much more determined in battles.

I think the closest comparison to Nurse is Hedman but even then, there's many things in their game that are different. I view Nurse as a better skater and meaner than Hedman. I think both rush the puck and jump into the play very similar. Hedman has better hockey sense and composure. Until Nurse learns to settle his game down a bit I think he's going to be a high risk, high reward kind of player that will make mistakes but also contribute in many ways.

He has huge potential. The past year I've been pretty surprised at how much he jumps into the play and carries the puck up ice. Didn't see that in his game when we drafted him. I see more than an old school shutdown defenseman in him.

Back is against the wall tonight for Nurse and the Soo. I'm sure a lot of you will be watching. Hopefully he plays another 40 minutes or so and shuts down McDavid 5on5 the best he can.

For everyone analyzing him and comparing him to players, I think it's hard. He has an extremely rare trait of being gigantic but fast. He is the only player on either team in this series who can catch McDavid. He seems to lack finesse. He can skate past everyone but when he gets near past the other teams blueline he thinks

"Hm, what the hell do I do now?"

I've seen him make a great drop pass to Ritchie for a goal and I've also seen him make a bad drop pass into nobody this series. Really hard to give a projection for this guy. He seems like a mean agitator similar to Pronger, but he skates a lot faster. He might not be as mean or a pain to play against, but that could come in time.

Yeah I notice that with him too. He won't be a guy to drive the play to hard from back and rush it up a bunch even though he can. He'd be more effective making the first pass and using his speed to jump into the rush but every now and then he has the ability to effectively lead the rush.

I disagree. Myers could be a little faster than either Bogo or Nurse but he doesn't accelerate as well and isn't nearly as efficient as Bogo, which comes into play for defensemen. Overall Bogo and Nurse are comparable skating wise (and in most other aspects) IMO.

Nurse is an elite skater. His skating is on par with Bouwmeesters was/ia

His slap shot wind up looks so awkward and looks like he doesn't shoot very well on the release. But man can this guy move.

Still think hes getting used to his size with his shot. Sometimes he has a bomb, but other times it the weirdest shot ever

Honestly there isn't a defenseman in the league with these physical tools. I can totally see him not even putting up over 25 pts for the first 3 or 4 years he is in the league. At some point there's gonna be questions, people saying wow this guy has all the tools why hasn't he put it together yet, we see it in flashes but never over a whole season, how can Edmonton depend on this guy he's not a cornerstone piece, just a physically gifted player with a 10-cent brain. But the truth of the matter is he's not even close to being fully developed and expecting him to hit the ground running like we've seen a lot of guys do lately is setting him up to fail.

He's going to have to learn how to read the game at the NHL level and pick his spots and feel his way around the game instead of going pedal to the metal all the time like he can do in junior. The only way to do that is to play NHL games - lots of them, not 25 or 50, hundreds probably. He's also going to have to grow into his body, he's only just turned 20, born in 1995, there is players coming out of the NFL draft today that are born in 1991. Not the same sport, but to be at that same stage of physical development he'd be in his 4th year in the NHL. He's not even close to being done developing physically, and it's going to come at the price of an adjustment period on the job in the NHL. He's going to give the puck away for some gross goals, he's going to get caught pinching and give up rushes, he's going to be too over-aggressive and probably end up getting suspended a couple times. It's probably even going to end up directly costing the team a game or two in the process because of over-zealousness.

I can see him hitting a peak in his 3rd or 4th year in the league and continuing to rise and become even more fearsome as he learns the old-man tricks once he's reconciled his physical tools with his mind for the game, it isn't going to come instantly, he's not coming out of junior as a polished Picasso but his physical gifts and skills along with his intensity and body type are a scary, scary combination. There's elements of his defensive game that resemble only things Chara can do in this league. He's probably not going to win a Norris but player's are going to be uncomfortable and thinking twice facing him every night. Rushing the puck occasionally when it's a good time to, advancing the puck quickly with short simple plays and getting shots through to the net - that's all he has to do offensively, he doesn't have to be Doughty or Subban or Karlsson or Keith at his size with his physical package.

There's going to be moments and he's going to go through multiple cycles of hype, backlash, post-hype success cycles. He's in a glaring market in what is going to be one of the most heavily covered teams in recent memory - there's mistakes to be made on the job, the spotlight's going to burn on him when he makes those mistakes, but it's the only place he can learn. If you stick it out with this guy you're gonna reap all the rewards, and there will be many. High, high-end character and grit. I'll take my odds with this one.

Yeah he has areas to work on for sure, luckily for us he is a very hard working and dedicated individual. If he develops a howitzer from the point he will become even more valuable to the Oilers.

Great post. This how I see it as well.

Got to see him last night, I thought he did quite well matched up against McDavid.

Not a huge flaw and it can be worked on, noticed he struggle a bit with agility/turning when McDavid would try to skate around him. So he can be turned around, but overall, I think Edmonton has a good one.

Besides game 5 I think he's played very well vs. McDavid. Theres a reason why the Erie arena erupts in boo's when he's on the ice

I noticed that as well, but I wonder if it has more to do with the fact that McDavid is such an unbelievable skater? Nurse had no issues with anyone else on Erie.

My main hangup on Nurse is that he seems to be a bit loose with the puck. I'm sure that will improve with age, but he'll need to work on it. He doesn't always seem like he's in control of what he's doing with the puck on his stick.

Seabrook is a legit top-pairing #2, Nurse will probably be a #3.

That's nice that you think that but it has nothing to do with a style comparison. Also Nurse has every tool needed to be top pair dman. He just needs to develop his offensive awareness more.

That's becasue of how great McDavid's skating is. Asking Nurse to improve on areas of his skating is like telling McDonald's their food isn't greasy enough.

Just from watching him this last preseason and these games against Erie as well as world juniors I feel he will be a very special player, got to watch him paired with Shultz live last preseason and he looked like the better player to be honest, he's not a great offensive dmen but he terrorises players in the d zone picks up the puck and makes a good pass out of the zone. I think we will see him in the NHL next season, excited to see the player he becomes, I can't think of a good comparison because I don't think we have seen the aggression and how big he is as well with being an elite skater before

If the Oil take their time with him, this is exactly how things should turn out. Don't ask him to do too much and he'll keep getting better every year.
