How is Nurse doing in the playoffs for SSM?

Stat line thus far: 6GP 1G 1A 2P 18PIMS

Has his role changed at all since the acquisition of Anthony DeAngelo (6GP 0G 12A 12P 10PIMS)?

In the first round Nurse didn't play much on the PP, and did seem visibly upset. In the 2nd round he is now playing the Zdeno Chara role in front of the net on the PP. DeAngelo runs their PP and often will play the entire PP. Nurse has been paired with DeAngelo recently and is still on the PK.

Frankly, he is very underwhelming IMO. DeAngelo is clearly their best dman and Nurse is way overhyped. He has been just "ok" in the playoffs and hasn't stood out, whatsoever.

Nurse hasn't stood out but that's not a bad thing. DeAngelo is flashy and Nurse is their go to PK guy. Nurse still makes some poor decisions but he is shutting down the guys he needs to.

I think you are right about him being upset about the PP. DeAngelo took over that role and that was something Nurse was taking pride in this season.

I still think Nurse has a ridiculous upside but a lot of that will come with time and maturity. He should be in the AHL next year.

Wouldn't be shocked if he was rusty as well. Missed what, a month near the end of the season?

Perhaps, but he did come back and play in 3 regular season contests prior to the playoffs. Nurse is a perfect example of a player that has all the tools, but doesn't have a tool box. Size, can skate, plays mean, but is slow to move the puck, and just flat out makes dumb decisions with the puck. We will see how he develops at the next level, but I can't see him being a top 4 dman on any respectable NHL team.

Ha ha okay.

Did he get player of the game for Canada in the WJHC? Oh that was the other Nurse, right.

Don't care about his offence, I want a guy to shut people down and hurt people in our end. Oilers are way too soft, especially on the back end.

Thank god you're not a scout.

Sault St Marie demoted Nurse on the PP and it went up 20%. Fact.

9 of the top 10 picks in the 2013 draft are playing in the NHL. Nurse isn't one of them. Fact.

The OHL game tape doesn't lie.. he doesn't move the puck well, he tries to rush the puck which generally results in a turnover, and he is extremely slow making decisions with the puck.. his low hockey IQ is on display every time he steps on the ice and he was booed by his home fans last year for a reason. The impact that he makes at the junior level is just because he is physically dominant at that level. He doesn't even have to do much defensively because once DeAngelo has the puck it results in a smooth, easy zone exit. It was a major blunder drafting this kid 7th overall and I've had more than enough viewings to make my opinion. Defenseman that can't move the puck effectively are a dying breed.

DeAngelo is one of the best offensive D prospects not in the NHL. That is no knock to be taken off the PP for him

Nurse is being developed properly. How ironic is it that when the Oilers put a prospect in the NHL after being drafted they get ripped for rushing, but now proper development is apparently wrong too. Hmm

Nurse is a near PPG defenseman and the best defenseman at the WJCs, the fact every scouting report disagrees with you says you probably have an Oiler bias and this carries to Nurse

I would say your insight carries about zero weight

Who is ripping the Oilers for not putting him in the lineup? He's just not close to being an NHL caliber player. There's no Oiler bias here. Someone can objectively post their thoughts without having an agenda. There is no reason to pile on the Oilers, their track record speaks for itself.

Like I said, I've had more than enough viewings to come up with this opinion. It seems like you are basing yours off limited viewings in the WJHC, and scouting reports from 2 years ago. No need to get so defensive.

I'm not as high on Nurse as other Oiler fans but I think you are being extremely critical in your opinion. but to each their own right? Its not a bad thing to lose your point spot to deangelo on the PP.. thats his bread and butter. Nurse just has to use it as motivation to get better which he has done his whole junior career

I'll chime in as a long time OHL season ticket holder and travelling fan who has seen many live games with Nurse. He dominates the OHL. He is a man among boys.

That said, WJHC is not limited viewings. Its several games of watching these players against the best in the world within the same age range, and he was a beast out there. All media personel covering the event agreed he was the most dominant defense-man in the tournament.

Nurse IMO is a guaranteed top 4 guy in the NHL with top pairing potential.

Is that just an observation with nothing behind it? yes true he is not in the NHL, that is by design. Nurse looked NHL ready at camp the camp after being drafted, he was smartly returned. AP wasn't in the NHL till 2 years post draft

Its weird that all your critiscm are either very much off base (putting the best offensive D prospect on the PP over him, using NHL play for prospects) or completely wrong (nearly every scouting report till today disagrees with about everything you say)

So you are either not a good judge of talent or have a bias. Either way, most of what you said his hot air

Oh man, Oiler's get ripped on for rushing players...and you're going to rip on them for keeping one of their top prospects in junior? How many top dmen play in the league at 19? Not many.

They said in the otters game that nurse is the only d-man in the ohl to keep conner mcdavid in check. (I believe he's the only d-man to keep him to a point per game the announcers said, but i might be misquoting)

That's very big. It was 2 points in 2 games earlier this season or playoffs last year I recall. His value comes from being a top shutdown D, but also being an elite skater and capable of putting up good points

Defenders take longer to develop, and if you think he is not very good, here is a list of guys who completely disagree with you.

2014-15 OHL Coaches Poll Winners:

Best Defensive Defenceman:

Eastern Conference:
1. Marcus McIvor, North Bay Battalion (37) – finished third in voting in 2013-14
2. Josh Brown, Oshawa Generals (29)
3. Roland McKeown, Kingston Frontenacs (8)

Western Conference:
1. Darnell Nurse, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (34)
2. Chris Bigras, Owen Sound Attack (26) – finished first in voting in 2013-14
3. Kurtis MacDermid, Erie Otters (14)

I think his knocks were valid on draft day but he has definitely become an elite defender.

i said he reminds me of marc methot defensively. Oiler fans didnt like to hear that when i said it. I didnt watch methot when he was in junior but i see similarities to how they defend

We will see how much Nurse has developed when he plays the Otters. If he can slow down or even better contain McDavid and that elite offense then I will be happy. After all that is what he is supposed to be, an elite shutdown defender. I am not putting too much stock into his offensive numbers.
