Was it Nurse that had the bad that pinch during a line change that left Reinhart playing as the lone D against Buchnevich? Or was that Theodore?

Either way, Nurse's puck battling and skating when he decided to jump into the rush throughout the tourney were terrific. Really impressive physical tools on this one. I hope he becomes the defenseman Edmonton needs.

Defensively he was awesome.

Offensively, he doesn't quite have the Morrisey / Pouliot skill to pull the offensive game off cleanly, so came away looking silly a few times. It was good to see the enthusiasm though, and his speed is impressive. If he can truly build an offensive game, he could be elite.

Still, he could become a guy like a Vlasic who is "ok" offensively, but an absolute shut down defenseman. Most teams would take a Vlasic. :)

Nurse was solid, Oilers have a great player. Any chance you want to trade him for Demko? :)

Well revisit this post in a year from now when the Oilers force a rookie Nurse into the top pairing position with no support

If he ever learns to shoot he is going to be a monster. however right now his shot is no where near nhl caliber.

He has a decent shot but he uses it like Phaneuf. I can see why people make the comparison but they still have different styles.

When Nurse shoots he just hammers it and 9/10 he misses the net and it ends up going the other way. He will never be a #1 guy playing the point on the PP but he still will have a decent offensive upside.

The WJC rarely award 2nd assists, but he certainly would have had a few more points if they did.

I was impressed with Nurse's skating. I knew he was a strong skater but his explosiveness really suprised me.

Nurse + one of McDavid or Eichel will be a unreal combo to add to the Oilers.

Yeah, Phaneuf has a little bit of Nurse in his game. :sarcasm:

IMO Nurse is more physical version of Jay Bouwmeester. Outstanding skater, rock solid defensively but isn't a world beater offensively.

I think some people are selling Nurse short on his offensive abilities here. I'm not saying he's like a Scott Neidermayer or anything.. but since the beginning of his second year in Junior, Nurse has 110 pts in 151 games, which averages to 0.73 pts/game. Not too shabby I'd say.

Its his compete level and nastiness that I'm very much looking forward to seeing when he makes the Oilers.

He is a tremendous physical talent but common he is nothing like Jay Bouw outside of the skating. The pinch when they were up 5-1 against Slovakia that resulted in the goal called off was ridiculous, 5 minutes left? Unbelievable, he made several other unexplainable decisions out there. He is only 19 but he is going to have to be nurtured along, if they rush him he is going to get eaten alive he needs to make better decisions. Cant rely purely on his physical talent.

That is pretty nitpicky. So he made a few bad plays. The good plays he made were far more. His ability to play the man, ability to read the situation defensively, the short quick passes to get the puck out of the zone were terrific. He has all the physical tools. In his draft year he was scholastic player of the year so he's a smart guy. The tools and a good mind will take him far in the nhl.

Brock Otten (great poster here and runs a terrific blog as well) had his annual polling of scouts and if I remember correctly one of the scouts comments right before the 2013 draft (and if I remember correctly Brock raved about him too) were that Nurse had the highest ceiling for dmen in the 2013 draft based on his raw ability. That if he could continue developing (especially his ability to process the game) that he could be a #1 dman and pillar player for whoever selected him. I'm sure you can probably find the comments on his website in the archives

Funny, I remember saying this exact thing about Morgan Rielly. Although he did it far more often than Nurse.

He didn't make a bad pinch.. he jumped up with the puck and fanned on a shot. Just an unlucky play.

Nurse is a not as talented Bogosian. Both are mostly athletic players who don't think the game at the level they were drafted.

Nurse is exactly what the Oilers need. As long as he doesn't pinch as much as he did in the WJC. If he focuses on defense he could help that team greatly next season.

His shot is pretty weak. Both his slapshot and his wrister are weak for the stature of someone such as him. I think two things will happen, either he will improve on his shot and it will be adequate or he will be able to develop an offensive game despite it.

so whats the plan for him next year, send him down to the AHL next year. I feel for you fans, but management deserves every negative thing they get.

I think Nurse looks like Jay Bouwmeester fused with Jason Smith.

Smith's shot / nastiness, Bouwmeester's wheels / head.

He's got the tools to be a damn good defenceman in the NHL.

How is Nurse doing in the playoffs for SSM?

Stat line thus far: 6GP 1G 1A 2P 18PIMS

Has his role changed at all since the acquisition of Anthony DeAngelo (6GP 0G 12A 12P 10PIMS)?
