Speculation: Larkin trade return

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Xenforo Cloud is upgrading us to version 2.3.11 on Monday July 20, 2026 at 12:00 AM PST. Expect a temporary downtime during this process. More info here
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
• The Red Wings would have no problem trading Dylan Larkin to Minnesota if the Wild were prepared to part with Matt Boldy. Other than Boldy, there is nothing else Detroit GM Steve Yzerman is too interested in.
That leaves Larkin with three choices:
1. Open up the trade demand to more teams. The Wild and Golden Knights don’t have anything that excites Detroit.
2. Prepare to start next season with the Red Wings.
3. Prepare to stay home and not get paid.
EDIT: Ahh this was already posted. But I like where Yzerman stands on this

As of July 1, door No. 2 looks like his best bet.
He would need to swallow all of his misplaced pride for #2

That’s exactly the right stance to take, IMO.

I don't think Werenski changes where we finish. It was always going to be 7-8 in the division.
I really think let the others arms race at Atlantic, become old without any assets and trade some values for the future.

Larkin for
= 3x 1st round picks (in value, could be players)

DeBrincat
= 2x 1st round picks

Gibson
= 1st round pick

Faulk
= Low contender 1st round pick

Copp
= Low contender 1st or 2x 2nd

Add 6-7 1st round picks this way and become the Atlantic monster for the 2030 decade.

I hate myself for creating hope at this point but in door number 2 there's always that chance we can get Werenski here to play with Larkin and we all live happily ever after...

Larkin digging his hole even deeper by outright sabotaging the team handcuffing us through the most active periods of the year while other moves happen and pieces settle into place. He’s virtually guaranteeing he’s not being moved by doing this.

Now setting aside whether anyone here thinks Yzerman should be afforded the opportunity or not since that's not the point, speaking more of using a negotiation tactic here. But if I were him I might consider telling Larkin “we are considering launching another rebuild here and that we have no issue hanging on to you as a tank commander for the next 5 years (we know you’re really good at that). Give me a list I can work with or be chained to me until you’re grey and/or balding and no team really cares all that much about you anymore”.

And Larkin doesn't have to be the first domino to fall there either. Move a name or two on that list and the pressure ramps up all the more on Larkin to get his ass out.

I said when this first came out that SY needed to get ahead of and 100% own the message..

He needed to say, Dylan Larkin has indeed asked to be traded and we respect his wishes. To facilitate his request, we require him to submit his 2028 10 team list, as stipulated in his contract, by June 25th, 2026. If we have not received his list we will unfortunately not be able to honor his list and expect to see him in camp and supporting Detroits new captain.

So far, SY has failed to mange this offseason properly

TSN had Lebrun and Dreger on, and Dreger mentioned the list needs to be bigger than three teams. I know some suggested Dreger's comment yesterday were after he expanded the list but no. He hasn't expanded at all.

So two teams can't even do it, thus it's a one team list right now.

"Your list of approved destinations is 3 teams long? Guess that means Detroit is #4, pretty cool that you have 5 more years playing at one of your top preferred organizations. See you at camp"

If Larkin truly cannot stomach another year in Detroit, I think he's either going to have to compromise a little bit on either: (1) a winning team; or (2) being in a preferred city/state.

I hadn't heard Boston mentioned until recently, but I wonder if that's something he'd consider as his initial options dry up.

Come on there's plenty to criticize Yzerman for but his statement so far was fine. He said he has a right to request a trade but we don't have to accommodate it and we'll do what's best for the organization first and foremost. Asking for more than that is being picky.

Respectfully I disagree on that last part...I think it would make it clear publicly the expectations...the timetable...and the consequences...that's perfect messaging

How the eff is Detroit not in on Borque? How does that happen? No
Matter what happens with Larkin you needed a number 2 center. Seriously, is Yzerman and team doing anything to change this roster? No unloading of Compher or/and Rasmussen, and no other trades as of yet? A team that needs to get better immediately

Yzerman needs to block larkin’s agents calls at this point

I wanted Bourque, but just pointing out he played RW mainly.

I think SY stinginess has backfired a bit. i would rather larkin , mo , ray have a mill more each and not feel like they were ***ed on their contracts
Their contracts are an indicator of the cap situation at that time, and the hope of them being able to attract bigger fish to the market to play with them. Those bigger fish never came, hence their contracts and the position we're in today. Folks can argue about why they never came or whether Yzerman made an effort if it helps them sleep at night, but the fact remains, the cap was an issue at the time.

Ray and Mo will get paid on their next deals.
