The absolute worst part about the Larkin saga is that not only will his departure degrade the team as it sits today, but because of the amount of attention this demands from Yzerman and the front office as a whole, as well as the general uncertainty as to what the return will ultimately be, has precluded the Red Wings from participating in the rest of what is evidently a very fluid and amenable trade market.
Along with blowing some of our futures on Faulk, who is now just a rental trade in waiting. The team needs a shake-up; the league is apparently primed with teams who are like-minded, but we have to sit out the bulk of the frenzy waiting for the Larkin ball to drop. Like maybe if the Sharks were always keen on being able to create an opportunity to take Stenberg, we could have gotten involved for Eklund if we still had pick 15 (or better without Faulk). Maybe we get in on Nemec, which leads to another opportunity, etc. But once the dust settles, a lot of the ancillary opportunities will be completely dried up and the pressure on coming out ahead from the Larkin deal will be even greater. There's still a very remote chance that SJ might want to get Edvinsson for Misa, but after moving out Eklund and acquiring a pick that will land them a quality defenseman prospect in addition to Stenberg, it seems far less likely.
All of this just is submarined by the fact that the Larkin news didn't hit until after the season and shift us into park while we wait for the decision to come down. We end up in the same spot we've been for the past 3 years... watching everyone else have the courage to do something even somewhat bold without being forced into it, and the Wings get to sit on the outside watching, enjoying the franchise altering move of signing Theo Rochette.
