Speculation: Larkin trade return

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
The absolute worst part about the Larkin saga is that not only will his departure degrade the team as it sits today, but because of the amount of attention this demands from Yzerman and the front office as a whole, as well as the general uncertainty as to what the return will ultimately be, has precluded the Red Wings from participating in the rest of what is evidently a very fluid and amenable trade market.

Along with blowing some of our futures on Faulk, who is now just a rental trade in waiting. The team needs a shake-up; the league is apparently primed with teams who are like-minded, but we have to sit out the bulk of the frenzy waiting for the Larkin ball to drop. Like maybe if the Sharks were always keen on being able to create an opportunity to take Stenberg, we could have gotten involved for Eklund if we still had pick 15 (or better without Faulk). Maybe we get in on Nemec, which leads to another opportunity, etc. But once the dust settles, a lot of the ancillary opportunities will be completely dried up and the pressure on coming out ahead from the Larkin deal will be even greater. There's still a very remote chance that SJ might want to get Edvinsson for Misa, but after moving out Eklund and acquiring a pick that will land them a quality defenseman prospect in addition to Stenberg, it seems far less likely.

All of this just is submarined by the fact that the Larkin news didn't hit until after the season and shift us into park while we wait for the decision to come down. We end up in the same spot we've been for the past 3 years... watching everyone else have the courage to do something even somewhat bold without being forced into it, and the Wings get to sit on the outside watching, enjoying the franchise altering move of signing Theo Rochette.

Don’t give yzerman excuses dealing with Larkin trade request should not prevent him from making other moves. It’s become painfully obvious he’s just not a good GM. He's not crafty, he doesn’t know to how to find value or under appreciated talent. he doesn’t have some grand vision to make this organization better he’s just throwing shit against the wall

Ya I can’t stand the excuses. Really he can’t juggle multiple things with assistants etc. give me a break. Yzerman just flat out f***ing sucks at his job and should be gone

you have to go for picks here. You aren’t getting good value in roster players for Larkin. We should have been involved in this draft but now I think it’s too late. Might as well hold on to him until next years draft. Top 5 picks were on the board and we missed out

Well part of it is lack of assets, the other thing that we don't know from the outside is how firm some of packages are. We don't even know if there's a package that's even being considered at this point. You can't make trades with what you don't have, and you can't build a team without understanding what you are building around. We know we are building around Seider and Raymond, but we don't know what else is joining that core. If you can extract a strong defense-leaning package, that loosens how you feel about Edvinsson or ASP. But you don't make a deal to get rid of Edvinsson without knowing you have him backfilled.

Yzerman doesn't have a good excuse to have sat out the past 2-3 years, but in this offseason, he does have a massive consideration that ultimately influences what path the team is setting out on. This offseason also has a much different tone than the previous ones have had, so some of it is timing.
