Speculation: Larkin trade return

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Lots and lots of possibilities w dallas

Robertson is obvious

Bourque, Bischel ++ is doable

If you get Harley, can flip him to SJ for a haul too

Lots of options

Or a 3 way trade with a team that Roberson oks for a long term deal that has the assets Detroit needs. Like I said .. Robo getting to market would really open things up I think.

The center isn't the guy feeding Robertson - that guy is Raymond. We've seen proof of concept with it already with Cat/Kane. Copp isn't the guy generating offense there, but we still see Cat put up 40 goals next to him and Kane put up 50 points.

Coming up, Plante looks like an ideal helper guy to hopefully plug in across from Cat. Bear and Nygard can be the third line wings. Genborg and someone the fourth line. Then it's just finding adequate centers to plug in.

Everyone seems deadset on getting Desnoyer or whoever, but those trades might just not be there.
Plante can be a bust for all we know

If bear and nygard become nothing more than 3rd liners we’re in trouble. And yes we need centers…. I dont even think Robertson wants to come here anyways

No. He got 85 pts from playing with Kane and #1 pp time. Copp had very little to do with Cat's good season.
I would argue that's the point of the statement.

If you have a talented enough winger playing with another good/remotely decent winger, who centers them is just a name on a sheet of paper in the press box.

If we get Robertson, it makes absolutely zero sense to offload him. Assets we need? He is an asset we need.

I don’t see Robertson coming to Detroit for a lot of reasons.

1. If Dallas is in win now mode enough to pursue Larkin, they aren’t going to trade their best offensive player for what would become their second line center.

2. Why would Robertson want to commit to Detroit? His stats will take a hit coming to Detroit reducing his long term value and even with him there is still no obvious path forward for Detroit to be a contender.

3. Without a long term deal Yzerman won’t trade for him.

I think that any trade with Robertson to Detroit is under the notion of sign and trade, which means Robertson has agreed to sign with Detroit. Why he would do that, money, mainly. Does he care about his long term value if he can lock in a max term contract worth $12-14 million in the final moments of the 8 year contract?

I'm not saying he can, would or should want to come here, but you never know.

Cryptic way of saying they aren’t trading DCat and other veterans? Why not just say that?

Because Don Sweeney has no damn clue who the Wings want to hold onto? They could trade veterans and still add. It's just a statement saying they're not looking to sell for futures. If they're trading a vet, they're looking for something that can help them now, not 2030.

What is up Yzerman. You could trade for something Rasmussen and Compher, in this market? Please. Second, third . Are you going to loose Lombardi and Mazur. Do something, open up space for kids

Serious question—

How many teams league-wide are in a worse spot than us?

I was considering doing a poll for this to see what people think.
I think there's several that are debatable. But Vancouver is the only team I would guarantee is worse.

And after seven years when you can count on one hand the teams you're sure are worse, that's a big problem.

Sorry if you interpreted what I said as doing it because of Copp. I'm arguing he was able to do it in spite of Copp.

So, say we're luckily enough to trade for Robertson:
Debrincat gets 40 goals and 84 points next year with Copp as his center (thanks to Kane)
Robertson gets 40 goals and 90 points next year with Kasper/Compher as his center (thanks to Raymond)

Throw in some quality defense led by Seider and Edvinson and quality goaltending led by Gibson and maybe even Cossa, and baby, you got a stew going.

Nothing Kasper did last season suggests he is going to do all that well. He needs to be much better, and quite frankly why would Robertson want here anyhow? We aren't a contender. Money is not enough.

Been saying this for weeks. People still want to believe a player like Robertson would come to Detroit knowing Larkin won't be on the team. And even if Larkin was still here, I'm not sure if that would be enough to land the best player available this offseason. I think he goes to San Jose.

Buffalo is much better than most think.

Not about being better. Buffalo is not a desired location. They would have to already be further along to be enticing and even then it would still be a tougher sell than other top teams. Buffalo has always had this issue, even when good. No different than Detroit, only winning makes players from other places want to play there.

Red Wings insider Don Sweeney.

Looking to add to what? We are losing Larkin. Even if we get something of equal value (unlikely) that only puts us even to where we are right now. Also seems heavily unlikely that another teams GM would make comments about what another team is doing. Not tampering, but along the same lines.

I'm simply saying that we have some good pieces and prospects and simply the IDEA of adding more good players could in fact work in building a good hockey team.

But ok, everyone can proceed with their complete doomerism. Debrincat, Raymond, Seider, & Edvinsson will immediately ask to be traded next week. Every prospect will bust monumentally. We will be unable to field a team because no one will ever sign a contract with Detroit ever again.
