Rumor: Larkin requests trade

I’ll ask again, which contending teams have a young and up and coming #1C player/prospect for him?

It’s not like he’s accepting a trade to Chicago or another bottom feeder, he has control of where he goes

Bidding wars only matter if they have the chips to trade, and outside of some shocking move like Misa for Larkin, who has that?

off the top of my head:

Desnoyers in Utah
Hagens in Boston
McQueen in Anaheim
Maybe Hage in Montreal though I’m not as high on him as others

Desnoyers and McQueen are both good options. Larkin could do very well in Anaheim. Utah's owner could woo him after how he's felt about his past few years in Detroit.

Interesting Friedge says that Yzerman, Larkin and his agent haven’t spoken on this. I wonder where this leaked from?
Friedman's point was that they haven't commented publicly on this. The trade request was almost assuredly leaked by Larkin's camp.

I think it's a moot point considering that Minnesota has nothing to offer Detroit. But if Yzerman is letting his pride limit the trade return for Larkin in any way, he's not doing his job. The GM can suck it up and do what's best for the franchise, even if that means dealing with a trade partner that may have acted like an asshat.

Agreed. My initial comment is easy to say because the Wild have nothing of interest to offer at this time.

I can't see why Larkin would burn his bridge in Detroit like that. It makes zero sense. He's the hometown hero, winner of Olympic gold, someone a lot of younger fans look up to. Overnight, he went from revered to reviled.

McQueen being #1 is awfully hopefull as well.

Zacha performed almost just as well as Larkin. Lindholm not far off. Why are they giving their only top 10pick they’ve had in like two decades for a slight improvement?

Utah would be the only half decent bet, although Desnoyers have never really been projected as some elite #1C

McQueen doesn't seem that impressive. Seems a little overvalued.

Fair enough. I agree somewhat.

Still… I feel as if ADB feels much more responsible for the team now.

We all should be wanting ADB back with this news.
Depending on how the org handles this trade (I say org because I’m not convinced that I’d trust GM19 with this one) it’s has the potential to be transformational.

There is a decent core of players here with or without Larkin, but convincing that strength, players like ADB, that this is a “blip” will depend on what the trade return is. If it’s a weak return, I think others might question the org’s direction and consider options. If they get a decent return they might skate through this.

The challenge for Steve is that Larkin holds the cards on where he will go to so it makes negotiations with whoever that trade partner is somewhat stilted, as they know Larkin wants out and wants their org. Steve is playing poker with a mirror on the wall behind him in that scenario.

Regardless, if that's his sentiment (which is fair considering how bad the Wings are), he needs to own it. What's the alternative? Feign shock and deflect all of the fan ire to Yzerman? How would that be fair? He was honest when he complained about Yzerman not getting help at the deadline, he needs to be honest now about wanting to give up on the team/org. Him not immediately coming out and saying "thats a lie, Im a Wing for life" already confirms the rumor.

Can you provide examples of him being beloved by players on the Red Wings?

And do you think that their words are corroborated by their actions on the ice?
In a ton of interviews. I don’t think they have run to protect him enough. But they also haven’t done that for Raymond and Seider if this is an overarching point. They are bad at that in general and yes I hate that a lot.

Guys come in to train with him in the offseason, use his gym. Is on the wedding circuit with all these guys. Was named captain of his teams clear back to youth and is always lauded by teammates and people around. Even guys like Kevyn Allen in interviews yesterday is saying it isn’t because he is a bad captain and the room likes him it is unfortunate circumstances.

Dealing with the locker room rot might help with the inadequacies of the rebuild.

As I mentioned earlier, I really think SY’s big mistake at the beginning was keeping Larkin and not dumping him five or six years ago for a haul. It’s become more and more clear that Larkin’s leadership isn’t where it should be for a young team. The constant March collapses speak as much to a leadership problem as a talent problem.
I'm fully on board with that. It's definitely at the top of the list of issues that need to be addressed to right the ship. If the team played with more give-a-shit down the stretch the past few seasons we may have watched some playoff hockey.

I'm mostly curious to see the ripple effect of this on underperforming players. Compher and Appleton both had solid bottom/middle six resumes coming to Detroit. We know how it went. Are guys like that a result of the culture or just bad misses by pro scouting? Compher looked good when he played 2C last year then turned back into a pumpkin when Larkin returned.

I'm going to emphatically say I do not want to see Rasmussen around for the experiment of seeing if underperforming players bounce back when changes are made.

agreed. SY has to nail the Larkin trade.

And I think he will. Maybe. Hopefully.
