well...a good bit of our inabiliity to "fix" things is the lack of player accountability.

This coach holds no one accountable past Wally and Boulduc. Sure, if you are benching Mayfield or any other vet there is no optimum replacement. It will however send a message. Honestly, i would rather lose that way holding players accountable, rather than the continued loss of leads late in games. Unfortunately Lane has not and will not which is part of why he needs to go.

The crowd is disappointed . There was a Stay of Execution tonight.

I guess the Lambert thread is the place to put this. Last season he tried to open things up some but it didn't work out. It seems like he's maybe trying to do the same thing this season. There's definitely more offensive talent/pop, but the D is a mess at times. I wonder though if in the long run this isn't the best route - to not try to win every game 2-1 and have more of a margin for error? The trick is to reduce the defensive errors though, while still maintaining offense. Then the question is whether Lane is the guy to pull it off. Just wondering.

The key to Lambert success will lay on his ability to tweak Trotz system so that the offense is allowed to take more chances, be more creative and pinch in when deemed appropriate by the individual players. That's was the difference in our losses to Cooper and the Bolts. Cooper had Trotz's number. He knew Trotz played a game of odds while Cooper see's it as a game of chance. Trotz believes if you wait long enough odds are the other team will make a mistake and you will get a good scoring chance.

Cooper believed that you took chances only when you saw fit. Cooper knows how to win the big games and win championships. He proves it over and over again. Trotz believed too much in his system to fault where when it looked like the Islanders should be taking chances and having the defenseman pinching in or the forwards getting in better offensive position the players were encouraged to stay back instead and play it safe. This leads to low GA average but clearly hurt the Isles GF average. Trotz is too risk adverse and when you have a player like Barzal on your team, he's all about taking risks.

Cooper basically told his team don't worry about the Islanders offense. As long as you minimize the mistakes they won't mount an attack. They'll sit back and try to keep the pucks to the perimeter. But he knew no defense is infallible. You keep creating chances and eventually one will sneak in. That's why it always seemed like they beat us by 1 goal at the most critical point in the game. When they saw the chance they struck.

So I have big hopes that Lambert will give the offense a little bit of a green light to use their creativity. Go all in when on the offense but hustle back and be prepared to defend using Trotz system. It won't be as successful clogging up the neutral zone and there will be greater goals against but it should improve the Islander's offense maybe enough to win the big games. It should also make the game more exciting to watch for all.
Looking back at this thread from 2 years ago when Lambert was first hired it was my hope that offense would ignite the way it has with Barzal playing his game. The problem with this team is in the last paragraph. They can’t make this hybrid system work as there’s too much of a gap between the offensive system and defensive system. They are not clogging up the neutral zone and there are not enough players back to defend using Trotz defensive system. Lambert has to rewrite the Isles defensive system if he hopes to hold his job. If I were him I would switch to a man on man defensive scheme and ratchet up the physicality. This would require the 2 defensemen back to close in on the oncoming rusher instead of retreating back towards the goaltender to slow them down enough so the Isles forwards can get back in time to play man on man defense. Also ramping up the hitting along the boards will facilitate such a game plan because it will help to slow down all the rushes penetrating the D zone. In other words give up on the zone defense and stop turtling.

I have to say otherwise this post is quite prophetic in regards to what we are currently observing this year.

Quoting your own post and calling yourself prophetic is so damn funny and sad at the same time. Oh, how could the rest of us fans be so blind to not see the divine prognostications of the world's best hockey analyst.

Not to mention that both posts are stupid.

Every time I see this thread bumped up I’m hoping to find out Lambert got fired.
Unless the Islanders fall pretty far down in the standings, don't hold your breath.

Will be interesting to see where he lands. You never know with Lou and coaching changes but I'd be very surprised if Lambert doesn't finish the season.

With that said, I temper my expectations even more.
We are going nowhere with Lambert...
Playoffs? Maybe win a round?
That's about it....

Winning a round would be a significant accomplishment and we'd be one of the top 8 teams. I wouldn't call that "going nowhere." And it would definitely buy Lambert another year.

I love how you people scoff at winning playoff rounds and at the slightest sign of adversity, you want to tear it down. Taking comfort in lotto loser land and dreaming about better days ahead is not having high expectations. It's the opposite actually.

Can’t help it if I was right and you always seem to be on the wrong side of the argument. But thanks for admitting the truth. BTW I prefer the moniker “hockey visionary extraordinaire”. It exudes such wisdom and self confidence.

I must say it’s times like this when you just have to ask what would Jeremy Clarkson say and the answer always seems to present itself.

In some ways I agree with you but it’s pretty ignorant to think this team is going anywhere with this defensive system.

I think the isles should try something different. 10 minutes before puck drop, they should post an in arena mobile poll of designing 4 lines and defensive pairings. The fans can vote and that’s what they play that period. Repeat for the 2nd and 3rd. See how that goes…

Barry was boring and fans wanted unleashed and unshackled. Lambert is exciting and the players are unleashed. So glad, the isles don’t have Komarov holding everyone back.

I didn't even make an argument. How am I on the wrong side of it?

See, this is your lame shtick. Perhaps you aren't aware that each of us have usernames and avatars, but when you are arguing with PK Cronin and others... that's not me (love you PK). Go quote my argument in this thread or find a post where I even mentioned firing or not firing Lane (or honestly whatever argument you are referring to because I have no idea). Because I haven't ... because I don't give a flying f***. And I certainly don't give a f*** about "being right", like you are dying to be.

I've had only two engagements with you recently. The first was in the most recent GDT, when we disagreed about something in the game and then you simultaneously admitted that you weren't even watching the game and "didn't need to" because you "were sure you were right". And now, this conversation, in which you've insinuated that I'm on the wrong side of an argument that I'm not even participating in.

Because that's the world you live in. You vs everyone else. You are the only right opinion and everyone else is wrong. No margins of error, no subjectivity, no gradients of truth or possible hypothesis. Why bother to even read the arguments and the people that are making them when you are so correct about everything. All the wrong and all the wrong people just blend together, which is why you think I'm someone else.

I don't need to play into this new brand of shitty discourse that's dominated by polarization and Dunning Kruger. I'll bow down to your master hockey knowledge, and I'm sure about everything else. Lord knows you couldn't be bothered to hear an argument otherwise.

What people want is confidence that the team can be a winner....
Lambert does not exude confidence my Friend.
I'm not scoffing at winning a round however I do not believe many would tolerate us becoming a Lottery team either...

Lady I have no beef with anyone here. I don’t even know what you’re so upset about here. I listen to everyone’s opinions and agree when when they bring up a good point and debate when I think I have a good point to stand on. No reason to get this emotional. I don’t even know what got you so upset about that post. I was writing about their defensive system. Take a deep breath. It’s just hockey. Jeez man calm down.

You're so cute lol. I'm not upset.. I wasn't even in the argument.. what is there to care about? I don't even know what we're arguing about. I was just commenting about your tiring drivel, which cracked me up when you quoted yourself touting your awesomeness. I like comedy... and that shit was funny.

That’s not surprising. I seem to have that effect on most women. Not a day goes by without some woman saying, “Oh Rehabguy you’re so cute you make me laugh”. My jovial nature has its benefits. You wouldn’t happen to be single?

The Vancouver Canucks made the playoffs once in the past 8 years. This offseason they hired a new (experienced) coach.

They are now the #1 team in the entire NHL.

Don't tell me that coaching doesn't matter and that we can't do better than Lane Lambert.
