Can anyone tell me why it takes a month after hiring your head coach to decide that your assistant coaches aren't returning?

Is there any reason he needed to make that decision sooner? Why wouldn't he take time to evaluate the decision before making it?

"Decide" is your assumption.

It was announced almost a month later. We don't know when they decided.

Maybe Barry told them that he wasn't sitting out the year and when he decides where he ends up, he invited them to come along

I haven’t read through the entire thread. What’s the general consensus on the Lambert hire?

I’m lukewarm; don’t hate it, don’t love it. The conjecture about him opening up the offense leaves me wondering if they sacrifice D and structure. This would not be the route I take w/ a team that lacks elite talent.

I would’ve given Trotz his final year with a better roster.

General consensus is that there was likely more to it than meets the eye.

The greatest likelihood is that Lou did this as a preemptive measure. Meaning, Trotz likely was giving no indication about whether he'd re-sign when his contract expired next summer.

At the same time, Lambert was sought after and it was about time for him to be a head coach. He interviewed with Anaheim just last summer. He had likely let management know that he desired to take the next step, sooner rather than later.

So, instead of waiting until this time next summer to quite possibly lose both of the guys who he would like to have coaching this team, Lou used the input gained from this past season to dismiss Trotz prematurely, only to then retain the guy he'd have liked to have following up on Trotz anyways.

That Lambert was first announced a week later was clearly out of respect. You don't sack a guy and announce his internal replacement on the same day.

Or, maybe the guy who said Barry lost the room was right and after watching a few of his high echelon players half ass the last 15-20 games, Lou figured he was closer to dropping dead than winning a cup and simply didn't want Barry around anymore

Or maybe the Islanders talent just isn’t as good as we think it is and as a team they played better than the sum of their parts?

I'm sure a first year coach who has proven exactly nothing is a better man for the job of making a bunch of middling players exceed the sum of it's parts better than a cup winning guy who took said team to 2 straight conference finals and was dealt a crappy set of circumstances this past season

I'm curious to see Lambert assemble his own staff.

I have to think the theme will be unlocking more offense out of underperforming players, or maybe trying to extract more offense out of the defense. I know Pelech and Pulock are known for their defense 'stalwart-ness', but I do think they could play with a more offensive mindset if given the leash/system.

Both should be able to get 30 points and easily too. They have the ability.

Both Jared Bednar and Jon Cooper were rookies with their respective teams. I'm optimistic about this hire and think people are overrating Trotz (even though I love him) and are underrating the roster.

Be prepared for the wrath of the board. To most Trotz is like a demigod. 😉
A great coach no doubt, but it was obvious that the team didn't listen to him anymore. Beauvillier, Barzal, Pulock... Plenty of players played nowhere near to their potential by the end of the season.

Shows us a lot about those guys character. Let's not give Adam Pelech a pass on that either. How many posts did we have saying he "checked out" is "mailing it in" etc.

I find it interesting that there wasn't an issue when the team was winning but as soon as a season of adversity hits "Barry lost the room", which may well be the case but maybe the players he lost are just mentally weak

I love Trotz too but I always hated that people say he is the only reason for success of the team. Weird phrases like "he would get blood out of a stone with that roster". Reminds me of how Tavares was the only player on this team until he left and we were great without him. We'll see who the one person to credit is this upcoming season.

There is nothing incorrect about the statement. Tavares left and Trotz arrived. Trotz installed a system that cut 100 goals against in his first year, and the team made the playoffs 3 years in a row, getting a little further each year.

Considering that most observers think the Islanders played better than the sum of their parts, maybe the better way to say it is Trotz was the main reason driving our success.

When people say "There's no one good on the roster" they're wrong.
