Defending leads…coaching issue or roster issue?

put the players on the ice who are best suited to play shut down D when the game needs to be shut down..... don't pair 2 offensive D together, keep the slow immobile forwards away from lead protection situations. dress wotherspoon who actually played tough D with physicality, effort and passion.

Sounds like a coaching issue.

There is some buzz going around about Lambert getting Fired,
The question is, who to replace him with? Quenneville? Babcock (Gosh No Thanks!)?
There also is Bruce Bordreau....

Roster issue. Many of the same players doing the same things last season when Trotz was here.

Must be too comfy in the locker room....
I wish it was like in the old days...
Coach Screams at the team while they practice the PP...
"1st guys who's feet stop skating Cleans the Head after practice!!!"
Can't motivate millionaires these days lol

I'm generally suspicious of "buzz", however after making the Horvat trade and looking good right away but then losing leads in 2 straight losses, I would not be shocked to see him fired, and at any time. We'll see.

BTW, we always hear about Lee being a great natural leader, but at what point do you wonder if maybe there needs to be a change there as well if a new coach is brought in?

Fan discontent is not buzz.

Babcock, Boudreau, Green and Trotz are the best available options out there (in alphabetical order). I can't see Quenneville getting clearance to return to coaching right now.

Lee has lost the room. Time for a change is right as far as I'm concerned!

You bring Two great points.
The Buzz are a couple of writers I have read lately. Small type bloggers, so it's a minor "Buzz" and not earthshaking.
But your second point is valid. I love Lee, but do players respond to him?
I'm not so sure anymore. I hope it's a accumulation of issues and not just Lee...

Seems to me that many of you guys who were starting to get bricked up after Lambert’s 3 games subbing for Trotz last year were thrilled avout the prospect of him becoming the head coach because he would unlock the offensive potential, and were afraid that a team like the Red Wings would hire him. And in the first 10 or so games it looked like that was happening. We were getting more offense at the expense of the defense. But last month the offense dried up again anyway, and we are leakier than ever defensively.

So here we are. Most everyone now wants to fire Lambert, while I believe that’s grasping at straws and it’s truly a roster problem. Trotz might have gotten these guys to have a little more detail in their basics, but it may not have made a difference in the standings. The core reached their expiration date after the Tampa series 2 years ago.

Barry's attention to detail, especially on D and to that end protecting leads may well have made the difference in points enough to make to top 8. I go along with @mm11 in terms of let's just get there and anything can happen. I think Lou and probably many fans thought Lane was Barry Light which to date was an over estimation

I think its a combination of a coaching and personnel issue. This team is a slow, methodical defense-first team because that is what worked under Trotz's system. Opening things up to get more offense, plays directly against the strengths of the team. Lambert apparently won't adapt or realize that this team cannot play the way he would like, and Lou can't trade 3/4ths of the team to fit the way Lambert wants to play. So here we are.

Without the blown leads, this team would be neck and neck with NJD and NYR, and now NJD is without Hughes…

Yeah, those teams have more speed and skill, but the Islanders identity post Snow era has been structure and methodically suffocating their opponents once they acquired their lead.

That identity has been completely abandoned under Lambert without the benefit of additional scoring.

Without the blown leads, with a better power play, yada yada yada.

A year older, a year slower. I’m not sure their “identity” would even be enough.

Lou knows it. That’s why he made his first trade of a guy from the core. He’s trying to do a course correction now.

I think the impact a captain has is pretty minimal.
