Prospect Info: Lane Hutson Part 2

Next game hopefully he pots his first goal and gets that monkey off his back. He's been so close so often, must be up to a good half dozen posts already. Curious what his next contract will look like as he will almost certainly be the highest paid player in Montreal history. He's already one of the most exciting to lace it up for the bleu blanc et rouge.

On a more serious note, Hutson's visioning passing ability buys him time because he isn't afraid to send the puck to a line mate (and reach his target) cross current, sending the opponent scrambling to readjust to the flow the play.

When an opponent can do that at will, you tend not to over-commit. I like that Hutson mixes the Hutson shuffle with simple and effective passes or dump-ins to keep the opponent guessing.

If he regularly tried the same dipsy doodles à la Subban, he'd already be out on LTIR because his play would be too predictable and opponents could key in on him.

But that's not what Hutson does. The fakes and dekes are part of his repertoire to control and move the defensive box. Subban did it mostly to offset one pressure point, but did not control the box like Hutson does. It will remain unpredictable in most moments because he does what he does to control flow and space, and it's always adapted to the play in front of him.

Someone wrote a comp to Victor Mete...

The streets will not forget...
Fr and hutson isn't even 4'11 like mete was, plus mete was bad everywhere maybe except skating, zero head fakes and compared to hutson? They don't know hockey

26 mins last night almost. The kid is special. Even those of us who were really high on him, I don't think would have predicted 25 mins per game 30 games into his career.

He isn't perfect but other than Guhle, he is the one defenseman on the Habs that I feel comfortable with night in and night out, DEFENSIVELY. And that is insane.

He's a lot more polished than Guhle was when he started out.

During the scrambly last 4 minutes of regulation he railroaded Troy Terry along the wall from a near standstill. Totally neutralized him but of course the nearest Habs couldn’t make hay and I believe Monty would eventually have to make that huge glove save (can’t really recall which came first, the hit or the save)

He pinned McTavish too, which really surprised me. He's stronger than anticipated. His skating speed has improved too. Just an impressive player.

He was also our only player who showed an ability to hound Troy Terry.
I'm not sure why we have the same problem with that player every time we play them.
One of Evans or Dvorak has to be able to neutralize that guy he's really all they had up front and we watched for a lot of it.

No but we should. Hutson for Kreider.
Overpayment on our part.

I just think it's funny how much other fans fixate on his occasional defensive hiccups as if Karlsson, Hughes, Fox, and even Makar/Josi aren't the last five Norris winners. Guys who have the puck a lot tend to have a higher number of giveaways.
It's because he's a Hab, that's no secret.

They also overfocus on the mistakes he had at the start of the year, as he was adapting to pro players. There are less and less of them every week.

The comparison comes from a place of disapointment and hurt. It's a an adapted defense mechanism from the Bergevin era, some don't believe that we deserve nice things yet.

Been better that I'd hoped as a rookie 20 year old, for a small skill guy he isn't as adverse to contact as you would assume. He picks his spots and knows when engaging is pointless and wins way more board battles than I ever expected from him out of college.
I was pretty vocal about his strength during his last 2 seasons. Rarely saw him get outmuscled and was never on his ass. I’m still surprised though it hasn’t been a real issue so far. That and his skating were the big question marks. He seems to have answered them and now what we have is an offensive wizard who’s pretty damn solid on D.

Markov was great but this is insane. This is like Top 10 player in the league promise and that number could still very well shrink.

The most talented Hab I’ve ever seen since the 88-89 season. Kovalev was close but I don’t think he was as frequently mind blowing as Hutson was even in his 07-08 season.
