He'll be fine. He's not some weakling who needs to be put in bubble wrap in order to play in the NHL.

Guys bigger than him have had concussion issues or broken bones. It's not because he's smaller he will be more or less likely to get injured the way every other player in hockey could get injured no matter the size.
I dissagree in regards to concussion. Small players, especially D take a pounding, and since lane's head is at shoulder level with many players the possibility of getting crunched (like Bedard) in open ice is a major reason I'd like to trade him for a "zegras" type forward..

Some positions just aren't conduscive to small players, so unless Lane can play forward, I don't think having him as a PP specialist is of good use for a contract spot.

Same issue in football for QBs.. you have to be tall enough to see past the Oline, otherwise youll get mauled.

Only position that can use short players tends to be RBs. Yes theres Russel Wilson, frank tarkenton, doug Flutie, but cmon ...

I disagree with you disagreement. ;)

Where do you see him playing? He wont be able to win board battles, wont be able to keep the goal crease cleared. If he had jets like Ti Paul maybe, but hes not particularly fast.
His stock is as high as can be rn... and hes years away from sniffing the lineup regularly...
Why not trade him for a legit top 6F we are set on D..

Would we be trading Lane for Zegras, because even though Zegras is a slight guy, he won't get crunched in the head because he would never go to the middle of the ice?
I dont really like Zegras much either, just using him as an example.
For everyone claiming Lane can be the next Quinn, id say that is such a long shot that holding his trade value is best used prior to nhl.

You're underrating what Lane has that makes him overcome his size: hockey sense. He's a smart player.

While he can continue to work on his skating, his brain processes the game for him. The same way it does for Roy despite his not-so-good skating.

Players like Lane don't grow on trees. You have one in your system, you let him develop and help him improve. Even if he's not over 6-feet and over 200 lbs.

You sacrifice others before you sacrifice Hutson for a trade.

I have my concerns about him getting injured with his small frame at the pro level.

Can't bulk up with post concussion syndrome or a broken collarbone.
The heavier he is the more his brain will bounce around in there when he comes to a full abrupt stop from a hit.

And even at 170-180 the kid better keep skating around folk. I remember how Gionta played for example. Or DD. They went to the low areas, but never looked in trouble. Mete just kept his feet moving (edit - just saw Mete now more like 185).

Hey I wish you were right, but i just don't see it... why not trade Lane to Flyers for Michkov (type of thing).

Is the plan still to have him play NHL games to finish off the year? I feel like I haven't heard as much about Hutson the last 6 months or so.

One incentive teams can give players in the NCAA is a promise to play NHL games and burn a year off their ELC.

Habs did that with Poehling, Caufield, Farrell, and Harris, to name a few. Primeau and Struble didn't get that chance, because Habs signed them to their ELC that was kicking in the following year and were signed to an AHL ATO instead.

My expectation is that once Hutson's year is done, he will be signed and will play in Montreal. But the earliest that could happen is late March.

Hughes also said in an interview that they'll look to sign him once his season is done.

He's being eclipsed by Buium, so he's a bust now. :sarcasm:

And his season might end very close to when the Habs season ends if his team goes to the Frozen Four. If his team reach the final, he has like 2 days to sign with the Habs and come play one of the two games against Detroit.

If they don’t sign him this year, he leaves next year. This is a case of a guy who would be in high demand, just on a curiosity level.

Not a Brock Purdy fan I take it.

No. Hutson will need to play two more seasons in the NCAA to become a UFA in August of 2026. Best option is to play a third season in the NCAA. He is very small for a D and not strong enough for the NHL or AHL.

I suspect he will not stick around. Besides, Habs have made it clear they are going to sign him after the season. My point is moot lol.

You've seen pretty much every Hutson's game. How do you feel about him joining the habs/rocket to end the year? Do you think he's ready or you'd send him back to the NCAA another year?
I would not send him back to the NCAA. Nothing to prove or learn there anymore. He needs to be close to the team where they can control his nutrition, weight training and have him working with the skill coaches. He needs to gain 10lbs to make 175lb, imo.

Only reason why he would want to go back is because his younger brother is joining the team next year.

I would sign him, play him one game as a reward to burn one year, then start him next year in Laval.

5'09 and 160 lbs. He would be the smallest D in the NHL.
He is now closer to 5’11 and he was 165 this season.

He said he's 5'9 and 160lbs on Grant's podcast.

Mathias Brunet a journalist from La Presse went To Vermont to see Hutson play in January and got an interview with him after the game. He wrote: "A late second-round pick in 2022, 62nd overall, Hutson is generously listed at 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds. We can give him at least an inch and 10 pounds less, just by looking at him". Hutson measurements are inflated, which we often see with smaller athletes. He is not Adam Fox, and Fox played three years at Harvard. Tell me what Fox had to learn in his third year. Nothing but he gained maturity.
