Lane Hutson Burgeoning Star Watch

I really like both of them, I think their both going to be great for their respective teams and they're both a lot of fun to watch but genuine question, do people really think Hutson is better than Hughes currently?

Just watching the game last night you can see that Hughes is making huge steps defensively, he's been one of the devils best defensive defensemen for most of the games he's been back (yes, there have been a couple of meh games too). His issue has mainly been lack of offense but it looks like it's only a matter of time before that gets going, he's starting to push again if last game is anything to go by. Missing the preseason with a new coach/system/partner didn't help and having dislocated a shoulder myself it takes a while to feel confident in your shoulder again no matter how good your physios are, plus he came back ahead of schedule (I understand people are just going to say 'excuses excuses' but the reality is it can take a while with those types of injuries and missing the first 10% of the season/preseason is obviously going to impact on your game early on, it's ignorant to say it won't).

I don't really understand this whole Luke/Lane thing. Just appreciate both their talents and enjoy watching them! I'm sure they will both be cornerstone pieces for each team going forward and they both deserve to be in the NHL (although I do agree that if Lane was in the devils system he would probably be in the AHL (and that's not an issue, nor is it an insult, he's very very good but overcooking young, undersized D is never a bad thing imo). He's not overtaking Siegenthaler, Dillon and Hughes with his size given the identity/system the devils are going for this year.

Lol. Using your logic and hopefully you are consistent, where does David Reinbacher fall in a redraft for 2023? Based on what we know since that draft which isn't much? Some could argue he is a mid to late 1st rounder just cause some guys have had 1 good year of development and he hasn't. Would you agree with that or would you want to see more? Hey man if you don't understand English just say that. I said it's to early for re drafts based on limited info, I even said he could be easily top 10 when we see more of the draft in the pros. Are you always this easily confused?

You want to talk about pettiness? Look no further than your fellow Devils fans who are in every single Habs thread « revenge posting » since last year where they called Nemec and Hughes first pairing D while Guhle was at best a top 4 « but still progressing » and how Habs fans were so delusional to think any of their D would be better than the two.


Fast forward a year, Nemec is in the AHL and Luke has 1 point in 10 games and rocking a -4 on a +16 diff team while playing heavily sheltered minutes. Now the same clowns are coming in yet another Habs thread to dump on Hutson and tell us how good Hughes is and how incredibly unlucky he’s been so far this year so please don’t come in here and play the victim and act like we’re the ones gaslighting Devils fans.

I'm come off as complimentary of both the Hab's and Hutson in this thread.

I understand though, Because I don't think Xhekaj is projecting to become a top four defenseman and I made posts about certain Hab's players that have later been proven correct you see Red when you see my name and assume the worst.

It's not as if our opinions ultimately matter on any of this. We get so worked up but none of this is a referendum on Montreal or the fans or even Hutson. He's going to do what he's going to do and whatever we say about here is irrelevant to him. Which it should be.

I agree, I try to not express too many opinions on other teams players because I don't watch them enough to have a valid opinion on them. From what I've seen of Hutson, he looks like he's going to be pretty good.

I assume people did a redraft of the 2017 draft after two years and they all look foolish.

Take Nick Suzuki for example. He was in the OHL for two seasons and was traded along with a 2nd and Tatar for Patches. He would probably have probably dropped in ranking at that time.

Point being redrafts this early just end up making you look foolish. There is always players that need longer time to marinate that end up doing better then the early risers.

Robertson is another example.

Hutson is at 41.2 his rookie season on a significantly worse defensive team than any of Seider's.

Yes, Seider was at 45.7% playing by far the hardest minutes in the NHL by a wide margin (and it was concerning when his numbers fell last year to 43%).

Eg, the Kaiden Guhle minutes.

Also hutson is at 39.9% this year.


Also, the difference between sub 40% and 46% is pretty massive.

Seider was -0.35/60 xGoal differential in his first 2 years. Or basically 1 goal for every 10 games at 17 minutes of 5v5 play a night.

For Hutson that number is -1.06/60. Or basically 1 goal for every 10 periods at 17 minutes of 5v5 play a night.

Or, over the course of a 1400 minute season 5v5, it's the difference between

-25 xGoal differential for Hutson
-8 xGoal differential for Seider

Ranking all drafted prospects is little different than a redraft 2 years after the draft, but you keep moving the goalposts. A simple point I made seems to still be out of your grasp. You didn't rank reinbacher by the way, on brand for your intellect.
