Lane Hutson Burgeoning Star Watch

He and Celebrini are definitely the frontrunners as of now. If Hutson continues to improve like he's been doing then he has a good shot at the Calder. Hutson has had the biggest positive impact on his team of any rookie, that's for sure.
Not just that, he's playing more minutes and he's playing a tougher position. Especially for a rookie. Celebrini is fantastic but so is Hutson

All true. I'm partial to d-men, but voters typically aren't. Celebrini would have edged out Hutson a few weeks ago if I were voting. Hutson has the slight edge now in my book. Both dudes are incredible players. Stoked to see how they play the second half of the season.

Hutson is now 2 points up Celebrini. Let's see what Celebrini is going to do in the game against Utah.

He's also a forward so you'd expect him to have more points. I hope the ultimate decision is based on more than points tho that's the bias of course
Celebrini is probably the most impressive 18 years old in quite some time. What’s Hutson doing is so impressive too and as a defenseman. That’s a great calder battle.

This was Hutson's 18th evenstrenght point in his 41st game. He's pacing to tie Bourque and Leetch at 3rd all-time rookie D at ES (36). Seeing how he has 11 in his last 21, which is ~150% of his production in his first 20 games (7/20), he might reach Larry Murphy at #1 (40).

I responded to at least two posters who said he was a lock.

Well that is dumb

3 points up. As of now.

But Celebrini played 9 less games.

Which translates into a 0.14 ppg difference (0.76 vs 0.90 as of now).

The average difference in PPG between the best forward and best defensemen in this league is around 0.65 PPG.

Last year
1.76 vs 1.12 (0.64)
The year before
1.87 vs 1.23 (0.64)
The last 3 seasons together
1.75 vs 1.08 (0.67)

Hutson, as a dmen, being at 0.14 ppg from Celebrini should put him front.

Its an uphill battle for dmen for these types of trophies from the start.

Unless they end very high on a few all-time lists, which will be talked about, and it won't be the case for Celebrini unless he starts getting more points.

Hutson, among rookie Ds, might end-up 2nd all-time for assist by a rookie D if we're pacing him for the season so far (28 in 41). Thing is, he has 17 assists in his last 20 games and if he keeps that pace, he'll beat Murphy at #1 (63 vs 60). If that happens, it will definitely be talked about in PHWA circles.

As I mentioned in a post above this one, he's pacing to tie Leetch and Bourque at 3rd all-time rookie D ES points, with 18 in 41, but in the last 20 games he's had 11 and if he keeps that pace, he'll beat Murphy at #1 (41 vs 40).

Finally, he's pacing for 62 points, which would put him at 7th all-time rookie D, but he's been PPG for the last 20 games since being promoted to the first PP and getting more time with the top line. If he keeps that pace, he'll be 2nd all-time, 3 points behind Larry Murphy.

I don't recall if Murphy won the Calder, but I'm pretty sure leech and bourque did... so there's that.

But I don't just want to focus on points either. He seems like a natural leader as well. The guy who is working his tail off and leading a bag skate.... you see his competitive nature along the boards too. He has his stumbles from time to time but his defensive play does generally get overshadowed.

Hutson is not just putting up the points but he's a rookie playing D against other teams top lines. He's my rookie of the year so far.
