Unfortunately another narrow one goal loss in Calgary. AHL Canucks have been on the wrong side of some very tight road games recently, and are really starting to sink in the Pacific Division.

Lekkerimaki and Klimovich are continuing their strong seasons with the only goals in a 3-2 loss. But they really need to get a lot more from some of their veteran players.

Something that should be highlighted in the organization this year are players that can pass the puck.

Jim Benning always said the hardest thing to do in the NHL is score goals. So most of the Canucks prospects were guys that can shot the puck really well. Lekker is an underrated play maker but it is not seen much this year in the AHL. Klim, Paterson, Romani, Fernstrom all goal scorers mostly.

Klimovich beat the Calgary goalie (who played well) by ripping a 35-foot unscreened wrist shot past his blocker.

Team played a fairly good game for the most part but a penalty parade in the second period hurt them. And not for the first time this season, a mere perusal of the SOG totals would give an incorrect perspective on a Calgary-Abbotsford game-- the Wranglers had at least as many good scoring chances, and certainly more in the third period where they came close on several occasions to padding their lead.

I don't know if Klimovich still qualifies as 'a prospect'. But he's now up to 18 goals on the season, and having a strong AHL season.

Aatu Raty with a goal and an assist is up to 33 points in 33 games.

Wonder when he gets back up with the big club next.

I don't think it matters what these guys do in the AHL anymore.

When a prospect is first starting out, you want to see good production in the AHL. But that production continuing means little if it doesn't eventually translate, especially when the prospect is leaving his early 20's.

with how the season is going, why dont they give jett woo a chance? just a game or two would give us a glimpse of his ability in the nhl.

I have no idea if guys like Lekkerimaki, Raty, Kudryatsov, Klimovich or Sasson are ready for the NHL. Maybe, maybe not.

But I'm just so fatigued of watching this collection of slow, journeyman forwards and d-men that Allvin has put together-- any new blood with youthful enthusiasm, would be like a breath of fresh air.

I mean it you're losing anyway, I'd rather see a youth movement.

but abbotsford canucks is winning, AFAIK. i think its also important for them to play in a winning environment, rather than playing for the canucks, which is a disaster at this point.
the reason i suggest calling woo is because we never give him a chance at the big league, should give him a short chance to see what he can do in the NHL.

The only way guys like Woo ever would get recalled, is if the Canucks were find themselves totally out of playoff contention, and then had hollowed out their roster at the TDL acquiring picks rather than players.

Then an AHL-lifer like Woo, might get a callup to help the Canucks finish up the season. But unfortunately for him, it's almost inevitable that the Canucks will hang around in the playoff hunt until the bitter end.

I think his defensive game would make Tocchet spontaneously combust.
Klimovich's real problems are when the puck is on his stick (except when he shoots, no problem there). Fumbles the puck too often, too many wayward passes, too much skating into traffic and getting dispossessed. He's fairly reliable now on the backcheck and with coverage in the defensive zone, although zone exits are not a strength-- again, puck issues.

They've already tried three of those guys, plus Bains, plus Pettersson. None of them can move the needle yet, and in the cases of Sasson and Bains they're at the age where if it's not happening now, it's quite unlikely that it ever will happen. Lekkerimaki will probably start next season in Vancouver. Raty is now in the Podkolzin Zone where his waiver exemption ends this season and he hasn't yet established himself in the NHL but still has some potential. Organization is very short on centre depth so probably he will be kept and given a real chance next season. Kudryavtsev will probably start getting call-ups next season. Klimovich has work to do.

Woo isn't good enough. That's why they don't keep him around long at training camp. McWard would probably get called up ahead of Woo and it's not as though McWard is busting down the door to the NHL.

I've been tracking the roster all day and noticed that neither Jonathan Lekkerimäki, or Elias Pettersson (D) were papered down by the deadline.

Unless it has happened without notice, I do not believe either will be available for Abbotsford come playoff time.

Of course, this also applies to names such as Victor Mancini and Nils Aman, etc.

- Dave Hall

EDIT: NEVERMIND

General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the following players were assigned to Abbotsford (AHL) before 12 PM PT:
- D Victor Mancini
- F Jonathan Lekkerimäki
- G Artūrs Šilovs (emergency conditions not terminated)
