Why shouldn't he? He's consistently made bad deployment/pairings decisions.
That's what coaches of mediocre rosters are always accused of. As if there would be a magical way to deploy Justin Holl to make him a Norris candidate, or some special chemistry to be unlocked in the forward group that makes Copp a 50 goal scorer.

By all metrics the Wings actually surpassed expectations and roster talent last season. So not sure what his bad decisions have actually been.

These are just typical conspiracy theory -thinking. Something is always better at somewhere else or with some different way.

Must be. Earth is flat.

In all seriousness Lalonde will likely finish the season behind the bench, but with this being his last season under contract he may not get re-signed.

That's kind of what I expect unless Detroit ends up in a major skid. Our schedule to start the year is much tougher than last year. If the wings finish another year just outside of the playoffs with a weak finish then Lalonde can take a hike.

I think he gets fired if we don't make the playoffs. No excuses even though our roster isn't better than last year...
I imagine his leash is a lot shorter than that. If Yzerman gets the impression that it's not going to work he'll cut him loose long before the season's end. If they struggle or show mediocre results early in the season, I won't be surprised if Lalonde is replaced within a couple months.

I’m not a Lalonde fan, I have yet to see a player thrive under his coaching. Some will say Raymond, but Raymond is expected to become a star. I would argue guys like Mo have not yet taken that next step, and I think a lot of that is due to his coaching and lineup pairings
Kind of how I see it too.

It’s really just Raymond who’s improved.

Then again, we also don’t really have any young guys on the roster. Which may or may not be his decision

Can't fathom paying Seider all this money and still stunting his offense by not putting him on PP1. I think people are forgetting how offensively proficient he was in the SHL.

It's obviously one game but even going from last season the Wings bigger problem was keeping the puck out of their own net, not scoring goals. So I can see sacrificing some power play time for Seider to give him more ES and PK minutes.

We'll see how it goes this season though.

Pigeonholing him into a defensive traffic cone seems a poor development strategy.

the last few seasons, the team started hot and had nothing to show for it. Maybe starting slow, and canning Lalonde is what this team needs? Maybe we start 3-7, they fire Lalonde, and whoever comes in actually holds players accountable, and can get more out of the team?

I don't know anymore, but I'm sick of watching bad hockey

I think things have to get much worse before Lalonde gets shown the door. Knowing Yzerman's track record, I think the worst thing that happens to Lalonde is that his contract simply isn't renewed after this season.

I just don't know how you're going to implement defensive structure when 3 of your top 4 wingers are Kane, tarasenko, and debrincat. Can't change a leopard's spots

well for starters having Kasper in the NHL would help, but Yzerman isn't interested in icing the best possible roster.

I genuinely don't know if he even has a plan anymore, he's spinning his tires and seems lost as a manager

Came here to basically say this. We have to play like we did in the 2nd and 3rd yesterday for a couple months for him to get fired in season.

But if they miss the playoffs, I don't see him back next year.

I saw an article that's suggested he could be the first coach fired this season.
I agree, this is the last year of his contact and with a worse defense then last year it's probably only a matter of time

The one thing that worries me this season is that Fester is very stubborn and slow to make changes. He started Husso in the first game which probably means he'll get waaaay more starts than we can handle as fans.... probably 20 or so before Fester realizes that he sucks.

Putting Chiarot on pp2 is a choice, ...

... a bad one!

That's on Alex Tanguay....

Hmmm... Imo he did very fast changes for Defence already and mixed those Top6 lines after 1 game of bad effort.

So not so stubborn so far.

Head coach has final say on who plays where, that is his job.

His name is Lalonde, and no he's not stubborn. Quick changes on D already. Unlikely Husso gets more than a handful chances at most, even that's not a guarantee if Talbot and Lyon play well.
