This is very true and why I posted how exaggerated it is for people to say LA got royally hosed... I don't know if those people actually have watched Iaffallo and Kupari.

The negativity to the trade as a King's fan is that I believe Vilardi is just as talented as PLD and there's a high probability their offensive output is similar. The difference is Vilardi isn't a rumored headcase, a few years younger and won't cost $8 million a year, yet.
Given the Hall trade, I don't know if you could give Iafallo away for free. He's a pure cap dump and the Kings already have Trevor Moore who's basically the same player. Kupari is basically a confirmed bust, maybe he becomes a 4th liner someday at best. They needed to move Durzi regardless to make space for Clarke and Spence.

Really the trade (from LA's perspective, Winnipeg did great to get anything of value here) comes down to whether you think Vilardi or Dubois will be a better player over the next 8 years and I just don't see how that can even be a serious debate.

The only caveat is opportunity cost of the cap space/assets for LA but which better center than Dubois were they poised to acquire over the next few seasons? Praying for Matthews or McDavid to hit UFA seems reckless.

I honestly don’t understand what everyone is losing their shit about. It’s a bunch of B pieces for an A piece. Vilardi is made of glass and he’s the only player of substance here going to WPG.

The Habs 2nd just feels like sweet poetic justice for all the shit some obnoxious Habs fans repeatedly shoved down our throats for the past year. LOL.
LA fans, you're getting a hell of a player.. don't fret over the salty posts some others are posting. I think PLDs best years are still to come and think he could easily become a ppg 1C..

I fail to see how any of those pieces LA gave up have big value long term. Meanwhile they got a low-end 1C in his prime, like has been mentioned.

Usually any team who gets the best piece wins the trade. Top centers are the most expensive assets in the league. You rarely have the chance the aquire one. Usually you only get them by drafting and even then it’s hard.

And I can tell you, personally I loathe PLD. But I can’t deny what he brings to a team on the ice. As long as he wants to stay in LA it’s all good.

All those pieces LA lost they can replace in free agency (exclusing the pick).

Dubois outscored Meier, Svechnikov, DeBrincat and Scheifele last season all of whom most people would consider stars.

Leave the semantic argument aside. Bottom line, LA turned surplus assets that they can easily replace into a (low end) #1 center in his prime. They're trying to build a championship team, not hoard prospects like Pokemon.

??

You’re looking at the wrong stats. He did not outscore any of those players. Only Svechnikov who played 64 games.

After the crap you guys have gone through from Habs fans, the Kings fans seem like the best fans in the world.
Habs fans were correct. HuGo was not going to give up any of their young stars all of which are better than anything the Jets got. And while Dubois could have forced his way to Montreal nobody was convinced he would do it.

Man the shit we'd be taking if Montreal put together a package of Dach, Beck and a second to sign PLD for 68 million? PLD would be our highest paid player for at least 4 seasons, woof.

I say LA got the best player in the deal so I won't say that Winnipeg won the deal. How often have teams won trades but not really came so far ahead? How often have teams "won" trades while being the sellers?

Plus this is 2 years of Iafallo.

Ultimately I look at these things with curiosity moreso than judgment. So, Blake values Dubois this much. That just means we can judge Blake by how well Dubois does. All this stat comparing with players in different situations doesn't tell me much

The deal is tough because of the love fans had for Vilardi, but Vilardi comes with a lot of questions marks of whether he can stay healthy and continue to produce as he has. The other parts of the deal are just a third-line glue guy, a fourth-line center, and a 2nd round pick. In the end, the Kings got the best player and a lot better.

I am sure the fanbase wished they made the deal for someone more exciting than Dubois, but he may be good enough to be able to take another step to get them to where they want to go. Kopitar-Dubois-Danault Is a solid center rotation, the Kings jettisoned every single liability defenseman this offseason, and depending on what they do in goal they should have a chance to do some damage assuming they stay healthy and perform.

Byfield-Kopitar-Kempe
Fiala-Dubois-Kaliyev
Moore-Danault-Arvidsson

While not the greatest in the NHL, those forward lines are both tough to stop and score on.

It’s borderline 2C production actually
He was 28th in points per game among centers this season. Whether you want to call that low-end 1C or borderline 2C, centers of that caliber don't move very often and when they do it's usually when they're 28 or 29 and poised to sign an albatross contract.

LA is getting a guy who is a top ~30 center in the league at 25, meaning he still potentially has some room to improve and there's little risk of significant age-related decline during this contract.

Here was Eklund's article about this trade rumour 4 days ago:

Montreal Closing in on Dubois. (E4)

The Kings have had interest in in Pierre Luc Dubois, but it really appears Montreal is willing to give more and is more comfortable that they can sign him long term…

Yeah the Kings got better and the Jets got more than most thought they could. I'd say its a win-win situation considering the circumstances.

LA gets the best player in the deal and will prob “win” this trade …. Winnipeg gets some nice pieces for an asset that forced his way out …and compared to other offers that floated around here for weeks it was a home run! And puts to bed once and for all the “we will wait and get him for nothing” bunch lol
