Ahhh, the ol', "someone please take him and his contract away" waiver play. How often does one of those fishing expeditions actually pan out?

Though in this case, it does seem like they're probably fully prepared to send him down to the AHL when he clears, to try to get his game back in some semblance of order.

Definitely one of those sort of projection "gamble" contracts, hoping he'll continue trending out from a smallish sample size. At a really unpredictable/volatile position. And it's backfired pretty badly.
Tyson Jost? Chicago traded for Tyler Johnson in the offseason after he was waived in season.

I think it's meant to be a wakeup call mostly, there's a minuscule hope that Buffalo claims him I guess.

Yeah, fair enough. Jost was a pretty small spend though, relatively speaking. $2M for the year and done is a lot less to take on than $5M for multiple remaining years.

The Tyler Johnson thing was all about the pick Tampa attached to take him. Classic cap dump payment arrangement.

I mean, i get why teams do it. It costs nothing to dangle them out there and hope for a miracle claim. Might as well. At worst, like you said...it's a wakeup call. But in this case, it really does feel like when he clears, Peterson is headed for the AHL. So that's an extra big wakeup call.

Its kind of funny how everyone is looking for a good starting goalie but no one is willing to price a hefty price for a starter or use high draft picks to draft them. Instead they throw large sums of money at goalies that are B/C class goalies and hope they magically get better

There are only 2 roster spots for a goalie you would think teams would make more of an effort to solidify a solid 1/2 tandem so they dont need to worry about Goaltending during the season.

Some teams need a goalie but not alot of them with that kind of cap space. I think he clears. Might be a team interested in swapping underperforming goaltenders though. Cautionary tale of signing a goalie with a short resume a year before the end of his current contract.

Giving him that deal was bizarre the day they gave it to him. Unfortunately for the Kings, they will likely have to live with it for its duration.

We have to assume they’re hoping someone helps them here, but more likely their best chance to move him, is to eat half his deal. At that point, maybe a team would take the chance. Although they would still probably have to sweeten the deal.

Good starters are not available at pretty much any price. Only those with warts. The drafting reflects the uncertainty and time to ROI.

It seems like he is in his own head and lacking confidence. this might be a move made with the assumption that he wont get claimed, trying to shake him up to reseason him in a way

cause he was on a $5M goalie trajectory at that point, he just... stopped
His 19 games where he had an average of .923, or the other games where his save percentage was just above .900 ?

Cause neither suggest giving him a contract at 5 mill per.

He was given that contract in sept 2021 which at the time he had roughly 54 games played and a cumulative sv% around .916. Was a risk given his short track record

He signed the contract with 1 year left on his previous contract and then proceeded to have a bad season.

I can forgive that a bit. I thought he got his contract just this off season

Buffalo's not taking him, not without LA kicking in something to eat that terrible contract and even then, he's even worse than what they've had already this year. From an on-ice point of view, no, he's not a help.

Now if the Kings want to free up cap space for something else, then feel free to tie something else to Petersen's neck that would make that tire fire of a contract worth taking and then I'm sure Buffalo would help.
