I think if they ride out this season the buyout is really mild, like less than $2M for the next 3 years.

The buyout is bad. Petersen has a $4m signing bonus next season,

Only a couple weeks removed from Kings fans giving him a reach around for his game against the Oilers where the Kings actually blocked more shots than he saved.

So the contract is not only terribly overpaid, has NTC AND is basically buyout-proof... Who the hell signed this thing... The guy was decent 1B at the best of times, these guys go for 3 mil. 5 mil here and all the marbles... Ridiculous.

He was inconsistent but honestly wasn't terrible until he signed his contract. I mean, there were enough signs to not sign him to such a deal, so this one is definitely around Blake's neck, but he had a good showing at the World Championship and did play decently with the Kings before. He had some leverage in negotiations and the Kings were willing to bet on at least giving him three years to see he could take the spot, but he has just been a complete disaster since.

In the end, the immense pressure to take over for Quick and be the bonafide #1 of the team just mentally obliterated him. There really is no other reason or description for his performance. He hasn't been good at all, but you can literally see the mental devastation in his eyes when he is out on the ice. He looks like a guy that doesn't believe he could stop anything and wills it into existence. He has the physical attributes and the capability of being a decent goaltender, but I don't think there is any way to save his mental state at the moment. Maybe something happens in the minors that helps him find his way back, but I think his mind is toast.

He is a weird case in that he has all the tools, but is the most visibly defeated goaltender I've ever seen.
This! I’ve been saying this to my Kings friends for the last year. He just has it in his eyes! It’s sad because he has the tools and seems very likable. But he’s just an on ice mental wreck.

Kings are obviously stuck with the contract. This is either in the hopes of kicking him in the butt so he plays better or just putting him in the AHL . Wierd contract in the first place . Guess its getting bought out in the offseason ?

Buffalo could buyout the Petersen contract. BUF will have a lot of cap space next season and then it's 3 seasons with a small cap hit.

And why do we need it? Are we going to claim guy who didn't want to play for Buffalo, who sucks, and just buyout him?

The Ducks or Sharks? They seem to be aiming for dead last.
Both teams are doing just fine with the goaltending they have if their intent is to tank. Nobody needs a 5 mil goalie you can't buy out until 2024. I would hope the Sharks are willing to be paid to take him on depending on what the Kings were willing to do in that regard but if they want to run with Copley rather than take on Reimer then they'd have to wait for us to move Reimer elsewhere to do that for them. My guess is that unless they're really desperate to move Petersen, they will wait until next year's bonus is paid then trade him with retention for a contract.

Our best move is to leave him in Ontario and eat the contract. Maybe buyout after next year. We all thought it was silly when the contract was handed out. At least Blake has realized his mistake. Hopefully he minimizes the damage as best as he can.

While it sucks, it also doesnt really matter. We're not competing for a Cup in the next 1-2 years, and we have enough cap space, with substantial additional space getting freed up after this season as well as next, so we'll be able to sign all our RFA's without much trouble.
