From signing a nice 3 year extension to the waiver wire within 14 months, you don't see that very often.

Well done Blake!

Lmao this guy thinks EDM is the team that adds.
I think Edmonton benefits most from the deal because it would clear space to improve their defense. Especially if Petersen is in the AHL. Plus, they get out of the term sooner than Campbell. Even though Campbell was previously a good backup for the Kings, there's no guarantee he will get back to that form and also 5x5 is a lot to pay for a backup. More risk for the Kings side, which is why I had the Oilers add.

This IS a trade of two goalies with 1980s save percentages

Dude is the most overpaid NOBODY in the league. Seriously. And I don’t mean most overpaid nobody goalie, I mean at any position. He’s not even a has-been. He’s a never-was.

I was just thinking on my walk at lunch that they might actually buy him out after this year, as they really need goaltending in the worst kind of way and he’s been unplayable since he got that contract. I actually didn’t expect him to be waived today though.

The first 3 goals he allowed last night were not great and they were definitely the difference in the game.

I don’t understand what grounds he deserved that kind of money on, but it looks like Blake isn’t f***ing around.

Taking a walk at lunch is really good for your health. It improves your blood pressure, helps reduce anxiety, and gives you a psychological boost for the rest of your day.

Advice: don't think about LA Kings goaltending during your lunch walk

Oof. Copley coming up or trade incoming?

...of course there's an M-NTC on Petersen's contract too, NHL GMs are baffling sometimes.

He was inconsistent but honestly wasn't terrible until he signed his contract. I mean, there were enough signs to not sign him to such a deal, so this one is definitely around Blake's neck, but he had a good showing at the World Championship and did play decently with the Kings before. He had some leverage in negotiations and the Kings were willing to bet on at least giving him three years to see he could take the spot, but he has just been a complete disaster since.

In the end, the immense pressure to take over for Quick and be the bonafide #1 of the team just mentally obliterated him. There really is no other reason or description for his performance. He hasn't been good at all, but you can literally see the mental devastation in his eyes when he is out on the ice. He looks like a guy that doesn't believe he could stop anything and wills it into existence. He has the physical attributes and the capability of being a decent goaltender, but I don't think there is any way to save his mental state at the moment. Maybe something happens in the minors that helps him find his way back, but I think his mind is toast.

He is a weird case in that he has all the tools, but is the most visibly defeated goaltender I've ever seen.

They make the same AAV and Campbell is a better goalie. Makes no sense for us.

This is why you don't give goalies new contracts before you have to. Unless you have a franchise guy, you just don't know, and even then...

Always curious how decisions like his contract are made. This one was pretty predictable even before the ink dried

I love being a broken record - Kings are in win now mode. They HAVE to go out and get a capable goalie who can split the load with Quick.

They only save 1.125M off his cap if he's waived, it might not be a barn burner of a trade.

Maybe they've tried to trade him and no one is taking so they are just trying to give him away for free.

That's a lot of cap to eat for the remainder of that contract.

So what goalie is better than him who has earned the backup job, or are they just attempting to shed his contract here and not actually send him down?
It's more of an attempt to shake him up. Since he signed the new contract, he has immediately and progressively gotten deeper into some kind of mental issue with confidence -- continuing the path would only further the exponential trajectory he's on. He really should go on a 10 meditation retreat or something (or a 3-5g mushroom trip with a guide/therapist).
