He gets paid $1m this season, and $15m for the next three. $16m for four years of a bonafide #1 guy is a great deal. He'll be 30 when it's done.
If we need to factor in his $1M this year to make the deal look great, then it's probably not that great, honestly. Also, we're still waiting to see if he can be a bonafide #1 guy. The most NHL games that he's played in a season is 35 so far. He hasn't even played more than 41 in any season of his career. There isn't any reason to doubt that he can be a bonafide #1 goalie, but I wouldn't call him one yet.

Walstedt wouldn't have changed anything, no, but a similar goaltender with star potential who's 22 instead of 18 might've.The point you raise is interesting, but I don't think having a blue chip prospect would have changed this outcome--remember that the Kings tried to get in on Wallsteadt but he would have been a few years off anyway, no?
