GDT: LA Kings vs Calgary Flames @6:00

Calgary's top players were the ones doing the physical work in the second period. And the Kings core players had no answer. Guys like Clifford, Andreoff, and MacDermid hardly played. So i don't blame MacDermid for making an mistake, let him play a regular shift with the same partner. He'll get better.

The low 5v5 TOI in the game amongst forwards was Jokinen at 7:57. Andreoff had 9:13. Tops was Kopitar at 14:37, most were between 9-13 min. Not a gigantic spread last night, the 4th played more than usual. And they were the ones getting beat up. Kopitar was at 50% CF%, not bad in a game we got murdered in the 2nd. Andreoff was at 17.39%. MacDermid, Fantenberg in particular were also miserable (as was Martinez but per partners that was due to MacDermid being an anchor). The top guys were fine, the bottom guys were not, and Stevens noted as much in his postgame pressers. This was a rare game in which the bottom of our lineup buried us. I'm with you, guys have to play to get better, but last night the bottom six forwards and bottom 4 d-men were pretty much the biggest negative factor. Top guys were fine, others were off, Quick wasn't superhuman, boom, lose by one (also factor in everyone in Calgary talking about that was the best period of the season and the best game they've played in a while--gotta credit the opponent too).

He's too slow. I think he's at peak and will not get better...

He doesn't look much slower than late-stage Regehr, hah. I think he can be good especially with that work ethic. But my bigger worry in last night's context wasn't as much footspeed as he seems to read the game ok, it was that his size--his greatest weapon--was worthless. guys that were 5'10" were muscling him off the puck. If you're that f***ing big and can't seal a middling, medium-sized middle-six forward, well, it's gonna be time to go to Europe in a couple of years.

Even Jon had this to say, not a really well kept secret that we need D help I guess:

"Christian Folin is approaching a return, so changes to the defensive group are imminent. There are still some holes on the back end, an observation made more clear with both Kurtis MacDermid and Oscar Fantenberg having rough nights and finishing with under 12 minutes of playing time. It’s approaching broken record-like repetition, but the Kings need another quality defender to add to their stable more than probably any other target at this point of the season. It’s commendable how Stevens has gotten quite a bit out of the current group and remains in robust health in the Pacific Division standings. It’s probable that Paul LaDue will join the mix in the second half, but while he’s put up strong numbers in the American Hockey League, a number of the reports I’ve heard back from Ontario have been lukewarm rather than gushing. He’ll still be able to help this team out tangibly, and as a right-shooting defenseman, he’ll ultimately be a solid option for a team that could use the lineup balance. Really, it just heightens the need for this team to trade for a defenseman, lest they want to approach the stretch run (and a potential Pacific Division playoff series) choosing between MacDermid, Fantenberg, Kevin Gravel and others who’ve held down the fort admirably but have never played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. "

So with Folin back, and with a LaDue callup, do we have

Doughty-Muzzin
Folin-Martinez
Forbort-LaDue?

Some names to consider as trade targets...

Niklas Hjalmarsson (UFA in 2019)
Mike Green (UFA in 2018)
Justin Faulk (signed 3 more years)
Alex Edler (UFA in 2019)
Ian Cole (UFA in 2018)
Erik Gudbranson (UFA in 2018)
Mark Pysyk (signed 3 more years)
Brandon Manning (UFA in 2018)
Jordie Benn (UFA in 2019)
Josh Gorges (UFA in 2018)
Marco Scandella (signed 3 more years)
Johnny Oduya (UFA in 2018)

Obviously, a few of those names listed are going to cost a lot, but these are the names I picked out from non-playoff teams who may be on the move given where their respective clubs stand.

Scandella, Green, and Edler interest me.

Can a miracle be performed to make MacDermid more mobile?

Nope, dude is garbage. He started off well and now he's getting exposed with more minutes. Doughty can only cover so much for players flaws. Kings need legit help defensively and it's not coming from Manchester.

Garbage.

Never been a fan of MacDermid. I was really really worried when he made the team, he was not good in AHL from what I saw. He is a guy that might have had a 5-8 year career between 97-04 in the dead puck era when size and strength were more important and skating wasn't, but in today's game I don't see how he lasts in NHL with his skating and inability to move the puck.

No. He has always had problems with extreme speed. The first time this was very very apparent was when Ontario played the LE Monsters two years ago in the AHL playoffs.

Just inserting one veteran guy would be huge.

Forbort-Doughty
Muzzin-Vet
Martinez-Folin

The big question is who.
The big thing is have 3 right 3 left. As good as Martinez plays the right side, or even Fantenberg or Gravel, it’s extremely difficult. It takes a great game by Martinez with the puck skills on the right side that would be rather routine plays for someone like Folin or LaDue.

The problem with trading for a right D is you get another Schenn

I’d like to see these 6. It puts 3 each right left. I wouldn’t call these “pairs” though. They have rotated guys quite a bit to get the minutes they seem to want. Look at the minutes Forbort plays with each D now. It’s like even between 3 guys, lately Doughty, Martinez, and Fantenberg/Gravel/ Folin. Forbort does not play with Muzzin or Mcdermid ever.

Every defenseman which would make a significant difference at the deadline is one which will be coveted by 4 or 5 other teams.

Those 4 or 5 other teams will likely have more/better assets to offer in a deal.

The best web site for advanced stats is naturalstattrick. FYI. You will see the minutes how each played and with who.

Take the DeLorean back to February 25th, 2015 and June 26th, 2015 so we can keep our assets instead of flushing them down the toilet.

The Lucic one is particular was just maddening.

Isn’t that Colin Miller? There’s your right side problem there. Great shot, can really skate. Always looked great in the Kings org

This is true, but what other teams are willing to give maybe the defining point.I think Blake can pull off a deal that fills the need if he wants to.But if the Kings do give up youngsters,Kings best get a younger player that has term either by current contract or a extension or it's not worth the cost.

He is literally exactly what the Kings need. A RH d-man who can play 20 minutes a night, can play 2nd unit PP and PK and just happens to be 25 and making $1M a year.

And that pick was right in the wheelhouse to get a damn good forward. Easily one of the worst trades in team history.

Yeah that group isnt going to work in a playoff series.Hope Blake can pull off a top 4 defensemen deal.
But, for now maybe, or if we have no choice, is this our best? Or have we already seen our best situation? Folin figures in
