The Kings best bet, if they realllllllly do want to go after PLD.... Is to offer the Jets a very modest trade package when it's becoming crunch time for the Jets.

Assuming MTL will be low-balling in their offer (which they absolutely should be given the situation - Even if they don't get him this year they know they will be able to in free agency in 1-2 years since he'll likely only agree to sign a short term deal with another team), the hope would be the Kings can put together a slightly better proposal that the Jets are forced to accept last minute so they don't lose him for nothing.

Then, sign him to a 1-2 year deal and see what happens in that time frame. After that, if he still wants to walk in FA to Montreal, so be it.

I'm not saying this is 100% what they should do... Just saying this is going to be how the situation plays out. A team (MTL, LAK, or other) is either going to snag him for a fairly low price and sign him to a short term deal (long term if it's MTL that trades for him) or he's going to walk to FA and sign with MTL. If he walks to FA and signs with MTL, that's a MASSIVE failure on behalf of Jets management, so my money's on the former.

If Blake can grab him without giving up Vilardi it's a win.
Something like
Arvidsson, Durzi, Turcotte
For
PLD & Stanley

MTL isn't giving up Dach so Kings should be able to make a better offer without giving Vilardi. Just need Luc & Danault to talk him into LA.

It’s only taken Blake 6 years as a GM to figure some of this out. Imagine how great of a GM he’ll be in another 6 years. I can’t wait for 2029! Exciting times ahead indeed.
That's the kind of positivity we need around here!

I have YET ANOTHER answer to all our problems.
Alex Killorn
Big, with a meanstreak, free agent center from tampa bay, 4.5/yr current salary. Harvard educated.
I once saw this guy hit alec martinez so fing hard he almost ended his career. Guy is tougher than a roofing nail with multiple stanley cups history.
Whaddya think?

I think you're thinking of Cedric Paquette

Killorn is just east coast Iafallo, anyone dissatisfied with Alex would lose their shit getting a clone.

It always amazes me how underrated Iafallo is around here. Dude probably showed the biggest cajones of anyone during the playoffs.
I couldn't agree more. I have always like Iafallo. But my gut feeling is that, due to the Trevor Moore contract, he has unfortunately become the odd man out. If they had the salary space and roster space to keep him, I would love to see him continue to wear a Kings jersey. He seems to fit well on any line he plays on.

How do you make the cap work? That's about $6 million going out and probably close to $10 million coming back in...that leaves about $3.5 million to sign Vilardi and several other plus get a goalie.

When a team is 11th overall in Goals For and (effectively) 2nd overall in Goals Against in the regular season, it's not the roster that's REALLY the issue.

I didnt like him as a first liner especially when the other winger was a worn down Brown. Iafallo had a good playoff. He has been good but also has had stretches of bad play two years in a row though.

Dump Iafallo too.

People were crying about the same thing with Eichel. I’m personally done listening to people bitch about players bad behaviors and missing out because of it. I think people should grow up and stop caring about the players decision making and potential attitude issues. They’re not killers so who cares.

People on our board were insufferable with the character assassination of Jack Eichel. And if Edmonton got a boon in taking someone like Evander Kane with his baggage. Kings can afford to take a chance at players.
Blake is not prone to risky moves, especially with the clock ticking down on TMac and his own contracts right now.
Sorry not habbbenin!
I wanted Blake to sign Kane.
Eichel had paid off too.
But PLD's agent said he wants to habeneate, so its a big pass for the reasons mentioned.

IF they make the deal for PLD and he comes in at 8 million (which I think is way way way too high, and I like him as a player) you gotta think Kopitar is gone or back at Edler type min deals 1 year at a time etc....so in that....scenario, it makes sense, they aren't sure on Byfield, replace Kopitar with PLD, and keep moving on.....
I hate that idea.
Blake took flack for trading JQ so I think that would add incentive for him to keep Kopi especially after good form last year for a 37 year old legend.
Only reason to trade Kopi is a deadline deal if the Kings fall out of the playoffs and even then he comes back and resigns given his comments about wanting to stay.
Blake sure is entertaining.

E. Lindholm would be my first target. Oh look, main board thread saying Lindholm, Hanafin & Toffoli are going to be extended before the season starts or traded. Guess they're not doing the Johnny Hockey thing again.

Upgrading from Lizotte to PLD is huge.

MTL: they aren't offering Suzuki, Caufield or Dach. Their 1st this year is a no. What do the King's have to beat? Dvorak & Anderson?

WPG wants players that can impact now. Know ngs need to shed players with salary & play the Kaliyev, Fagemo, Kupari, Grundström & &? Who am I forgetting? Oh yeah! JAD.
Correctomundo!
PLD , I never like him.
Paying the price for him and to extend him would cause the Kings to possible fall out of a playoff spot and potentially not return for many years.

On a team of eunuchs, the man with one ball is king.
You can't get away with anything around here :P

@TheBannermen nailed it succinctly

It's very much a lateral move w/Vilardi, even down to the nuclear pace to start the year and the games-played concerns.

I agree - I don't like it. Especially if he's getting that much $$$. Honestly, I'd rather have Vilardi over him.

There are some ways to acquire Dubois, depending on what Winnipeg is looking for.

Futures? Not a chance. The Kings already spent a lot of valuable capital to acquire Fiala and Gavrikov for beyond a season.

If it's roster players, the Kings could trade Durzi + one of Iafallo/Moore/Arvidsson as part of a package. Say you go with Iafallo, you'd have the following setup:

Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Moore - Danault - Vilardi
Fiala - Dubois - Kaliyev
Grundstrom - Lizotte - Kupari/other

Anderson - Doughty
Gavrikov - Clarke
Bjornfot - Roy
Spence

The Kings don't have a prospect who can fill in for a skilled center slot right away if the plan is to have Byfield play on the wing. If the plan is to move him to center, they should do it right away and not bother trading for anyone.

Frankly, I just don't like the idea of trading to bring in more players. The Kings need to start getting more picks again. But if they are going to go for Wilson or Dubois, hopefully they can at least make some sensible trades and free up roster spots for the upcoming prospects.

Yannetti said on Hoven's podcast yesterday that they basically project players up to 7 years out, though (paraphrasing) they hope to see more yields within 5 years. The 2017 and 2018 draft class should start getting some action in the NHL if this is their development plan.
Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Iafallo - Danault - Moore
Fiala - Vilardi - Kaliyev
JAD - Kupari - McEwen
Lias, Fagemo

MA - DD
Gav - Durzi
Bjornfot - Roy
Moverare

Korpi
Copley
to start season and see how it goes.
Mix and match based on injuries, form and opponents.
Evaluate/shop players here.
Adjust before deadline with deal(s) for what is needed.

If PLD was 5’11”, nobody would even be entertaining this absurdity.

He plays small, brings the opposite of the culture needed on the roster, and is prohibitively expensive in acquisition cost & salary alike.

Could not want him less.

If true Blake knows this and obviously tried to trade for him in the past, the organization thinks they can fix him.

I tell you this - I will be extremely pissed if we lose Vilardi or Clarke. Vilardi just looks like he's going to be a force in this league for years to come.
Vilardi has pretty much become my favourite King since he scored his first goal. It had better be a home run deal that sees him traded, and this ain’t that.
