Speculation: LA Kings Offseason Thread

Of course it is. But I would also imagine that Blake would want to bring back Kopitar, as well.

Some pieces will need to be moved to make room for Matthews at $10 and Kopitar at like $5.5. But if Blake can make it work, he will. He doesn’t know how to make his own star forwards. So he’ll just buy one and the Kings will be a black hole team until the early 2030s.
I could see Matthews and Vilardi doing some real damage together, but I still don't want to see it.

What do you guys think about acquiring PLD and dealing off all of our cap dumps like Iafallo, Moore, Walker and Petersen? I think if we eventually roll Byfield and Dubois as 1a and 1b, we could do some damage. We gotta dump cap though.

Matthews is definitely getting more than $10 million.

And for those who don’t know, he was born in California and raised in Arizona. It’s a rare case of a star player's “close to home” destination being LA. Just an observation. Not an endorsement.

Am I the only one that thinks we aren’t going to make any substantial moves? It wouldn’t shock me in the least to see this roster next year:

Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
Fiala - Lizotte - Vilardi
Iafallo - Kupari - Grundstrom

Anderson - Doughty
Durzi - Roy
Bjornfot - Walker

Copley
Petersen

I think some of you are getting your hopes up and will be very disappointed.

nope

i think that's exactly the lineup we're looking at next season but i think kaliyev is in over grundstrom regular season

i can totally see both korpisalo and gavrikov walking in FA and blake just sitting on his hands praying that clarke plays his way into the lineup

Blake will try and improve the roster.

I think people read too much into management's comments. It's highly unlikely Petersen is in the NHL for the Kings next year. He's not even better than Villalta.

Signing Matthews to a 7 or 8-year high cap deal would be a big mistake for this franchise, but it would be so BLuc.
I think you’re right. That sort of move though is a possibility if enough of the young guys take a step. So if the take becomes Matthew’s takes the team over the top then they may well do it. Would an overpayment of term be worth 1 cup? yep.

Now, I’m not suggesting they should do it but I could see the thought process, but it’s a lot of ifs. You’d need Clarke to show he’s going to be genuinely Elite and for Byfield to break out properly as an absolute minimum to even make such a move remotely defensible. You’d also need someone like Kaliyev (or another younger player) to show he belongs in the top 9 and PP1.

The biggest problem is I’m not convinced those guys will get the situational opportunities to do that. We need some cheaper guys to be playing meaningful roles.

Pretty sure PLD has basically confirmed he's going to Montreal once he hits free agency. Won't be so easy to get rid of all that cap either

Matthews at 10M is actually fairly reasonable. He's 27 in the first year of his deal.

But he's not going to sign for 10M.

Negotiations would start at him asking for 17M in the first year of his deal (mostly a bonus), and go from there.

If you have the ability to sign a top 5 player in their prime... you do it.

Question will be, what will Anze be asking for after his current deal is up

To be fair, Lombardi had the same issue but he did relatively ok with Toffoli and Pearson playing well on the 2nd line at the right time in the window.

This organization has it backwards. Scoring wingers are supposed to come more easily than defensemen, but they don't with the Kings.

Is Matthews a top-5 player? He wasn't even a top-20 forward in scoring, and his teammate Marner, who had more points, is also a Selke finalist.

I think everyone has come to that conclusion.

If lombardi built from the back end first, G, D, C, W, maybe I can build from the outside in, W, C, D, G!

Kings need to figure out what they’re going to do about the Kopitar situation.
Press Box to help Kopitar making up his mind about retiring

Blake directly said that Petersen will be with the Kings because he is paid to be a NHL goalie

The key still remains revamping the bottom pairing on D. If Blake can trade Durzi for a decent pick, maybe as part of a package to get back into the first round, that's a win. Walker cannot be on the team with that contract next season. He knows it. He'll either be traded for scraps or get bought out. If replaced with Clarke and Spence, that's ~$2.5M of cap space.

I don't see how JAD gets a contract of $1.3M. That's just not happening. There's $400K of space there as well.

The rest is going to require some creative work from Blake and his team of accountants.

The Kings will acquire another goaltender in the offseason.

Whether it be re-signing Korpisalo, or another UFA, or via trade.

Petersen will be allowed to compete for a spot in camp, and in all likelihood he'll fail and be buried in the AHL again. The other option, although unlikely, will be trading him plus our 2024 1st to dump his contract. He has a M-NTC.

Bring back Lemieux and Avery and then add a heavy weight like MacDermid.

Lemieux - Lizotte - Avery

That would be the most annoying line in hockey.

Goaltenders the Kings should try to sign (not necessarily in order):
- Laurent Brossoit
- Semyon Varlamov
- Tristan Jarry
- MacKenzie Blackwood
- Korpisalo (meh)
- Adin Hill

LHD the Kings should try to sign (again, no particular order):
- Ryan Graves
- Carson Soucy
- Brian Dumoulin
- Vladdy Gavrikov
- Niko Mikkola
- Robert Hagg

If the Kings can sign 1 player on each list (and re-sign Vilardi of course), they'll be looking pretty good going into next season IMO.

Main thing is, in order to do that they'd likely need to deal Durzi, Walker, and either a roster forward or the Petersen contract... Which.... I guess we just have to hope for the best on that front lol.
