Honestly from a numbers and player caliber perspective it’s a good deal.

However I really wish this team could move on from Kopitar. Another two years where that spot is road blocked. Just disappointing because they will use him 1c absolutely.

The Kopi extension absolutely does NOT "guarantee" any of the following assumptions:
- 'Byfield is a goner'
- 'Byfield is locked in at wing for the next 3 years'

Could it maybe hint at those things being possible/probable??? Yes, sure.

But you guys make these claims as if they're absolute when in reality who tf knows how the next couple years play out.

If Kopi loses a step, he could 100% shift to LW. If Byfield has a breakout season and starts to look like a stud, they could absolutely move him back to center (probably not this coming season but definitely could happen during the 24/25 season)

These 'conclusions' you guys are coming to are so arbitrary sometimes lol
hell Kopitar could move to the wing for the last year for all we know.

All i truly know is had he signed 2x$7m elsewhere I would have been pissed and then sad and then pissed again.

Fair deal - I mean part of this is just an insult to say you wanna pay your top line center like $4-5 mill a year. Fiala was the only guy on the team who had a shot at passing him in points if he stayed healthy. Kopitar's style and effectiveness should continue into the foreseeable future. Bottom line is there's $3 million extra there and the cap is going up a bit. We have several high impact players locked down at a good rate in their prime - just a few areas to shore up. I think when the season starts Blake will see how everything is going and make additional adjustments if needed.

I'm still a little bent about losing Iafallo and Vilardi, but I think we will have a very competitive team next year and will take another step forward with Clarke and a solidified D.

Move on from Kopitar? Are you serious? Lady Byng himself? What did he do/not do last year that has you thinking we should move on? He's everything you want in a center! 74 pts in 80 games. +20. 7 points in 6 playoff games. Hello!

This.
Patty Bergeron has been playing on a much smaller AAV. Hoped Kopitar would follow the example instead of extracting his top market value, again.
Bergeron is taking a pretty big discount compared to what he could probably get on the open market. Guarantee another playoff team would add Kopi at $7 mill. Bottom line, we are saving $3 mill.

Hey my Kings friends,

Great to see your legendary Captain in a position to retire a King.

Perhaps the AAV is a touch high, but he’d probably get at least a million more on the open market, possibly 2, imho.

Cheers

Yeah. He’s not a bad player at all. I just think it’s a mistake keeping him. I’d rather have Byfield take the helm at 1C asap and let him sink or swim vs him not getting the opportunity at all.

I love Kopitar but he’s absolutely a hindrance to the future.

As there should be IMO.

2012 had Kopitar, Richards, Carter, Stoll. They moved Carter to the wing because of the center depth. Was great insurance if someone got hurt. Carter took draws on strong side. Not sure how many times we saw LA ice the puck than Carter or Rirchards get kicked out of the draw to buy more time. Having centered is a good thing.

Can anyone look up what % of the cap the combined Centers I listed above were in 2012 compared to this year (which will not even include Kopitars lower hit and higher cap once it kicks in)
Richards, Carter weren’t added until the roster was ready to compete. We have legitimate wings in Fiala and Kempe. After that it’s a significant drop off and defense hasn’t been that great.

Our goaltenders were signed off the discount rack. Bluc are doing the opposite of what built them into annual cup contenders. Building from the middle out instead of from the net. Looking at the oilers series, the problem wasn’t centers. It was goaltending and defense. 17 goals in the final three games. WTF is that?

Point is, there’s roster issues all over. This team is very top heavy and there’s declining assets in Byfield and Turcotte. Two top 5 picks they absolutely blew and their answer is to trade more assets for PLD and extend a geriatric center.

Or he might find success as a winger? Why rush to dump him before we know exactly what he is? Now if he struggles this season in a top six role, I'd start getting worried.
Such cope. Why not just draft Stutzle instead if Byfield at wing is the plan. So stupid.

I love Kopitar. It's great he's staying on and will likely retire as a Kings. but this is a dissapointment. First, it's more than what we should pay. I don't care how well he's played last season or seasons before -- it's the two years (after this season) that i'm more concerned with.

Further, it's a huge WTF move for the organization with centers and QB especially. If he's not moving to center anytime soon (which he won't be now), then they blew that pick. Even more so, they've blown keeping him. He should have been traded for a LHD, goalie, etc. when we had a chance -- if the organization had no plans in having him center a top 3 line.

Yet again, 'no plan' Blake in control of the organization.

All the centers we drafted will be moved eventually. Either via trade or to wing.
There is zero path forward now for Byfield at center unless he replaces Lizotte next year. You can't keep him for 4 years playing wing, he needs to play center, if not, I agree it was a blown pick unless he turns into a 80+pt winger.

The Senators actually have Stutzle playing center now. I also don't have a time machine to fix their mistakes.
Stop making excuses though. I don’t know how you’re puffing your chest like it’s a good thing that none of our blue chip centers are playing center.

You know how bad of a look that is that byfield is a winger?

I love Kopitar but this was the wrong move man. Just let the guy go. It’s byfields time to sink or swim. Give him the option to. Kopitar already got paid big anyways not like the Kings should have been giving him a sweet gesture by shoveling more cash to him to say thank you.

After this season if they think QB is ready to move to C Danault is the one that can be moved. His deal is decent now and will look even better if the cap goes up. Given Kopi is still our best C, until someone proves he isn’t, the deal is fair BUT I don’t like the timing of it, should’ve waited until around the TDL so there was evidence of continued high level play given his age.

I'm just stating facts, holmes. Stutzle became a better player once the Senators shifted him to center. I know, it's hard to fathom a coach putting a young player in a position to succeed.

If the team was ready to compete why was Penner needed? JMFJ was moved out that year to make room for Voynov, Gagne was supposed to be a bigger piece than he was, why was Loktinov on the team? Point is there was work that needed to be done in 2012. LA got lucky with Quick (Bernier was drafted to be the guy) and added assets down the middle. I agree that LA is not likely to win anything with the current goaltending duo. I sure as shit hope having Kopitar in the fold at $7m allows it to be better addressed next year.

Calling Kopitar a geriatric center is maybe the worst "kings fan" post I have seen. Just a terrible terrible take.

Yes placating to Kopitar is a great way to make Byfield succeed.
