Byfield locked into a winger for at least the next 3 seasons, barring a Danault trade.

It will be up to Turcotte to win the 4C spot to keep any of the hope alive for the 4 1st round centers actually being centers for the Kings.

Hoven said in the end of the year podcast that QB had to play as a C because he was the only hope of a 1C to replace Kopitar. I’m sure there will be some massive spin to try and not make the organization look bad. Probably give Blake credit for trading for a 1C instead.

Nobody wanted to consider a winger at 5 the year before, and then the next year we end up with one at 2, interesting.

I actually question his hockey sense to be a center and think a move to wing presents the best chance at turning his career around. But value wise it’s far from ideal, a winger taken at 2 should be big time scorer.

Wow overpayment. Everyone thought that would be 5 million.
Explain please? You know we just traded for a newly signed center that’ll make more than Kopitar but will likely get outproduced or the fact that only Fiala will likely outscore him but he’s a strictly offensive player

Kopi is back!

Also, can someone ask Kopi if he was a fan of Laibach & if it's the greatest Slovenian group ever? 😂 80's early industrial dance music rebelling against the Culture of the time. Proto Rammstein?

It's anti fascist before anyone freaks.

Sigh. I thought we’d get a hometown discount or Bluc would negotiate for future cap savings so we can have room to add decent pieces to the team in the future.

Next we’ll hear Doughty has been extended at the same rate.
what do you think he could have received on the open market? He is a legit #1 center regardless of his age. Which should not come into play as it is only a 2 year deal.

There was an actual winger available at 2 that broke 90 points last season. Now we’re trying to convert another C to wing. There’s no plan in place, management is just flying blind and winging it.

flip side is you need to be able to change course on the fly. What's crazy about Stu is I could see him growing into a center. not sure if that would rub salt on the wound or not. haha

I mean $3mill is significant.. it could have landed us Carson Soucy

It’s more about roster construction than Kopi himself.

We have PLD and Danault, not to mention Byfield. The whole point of the PLD trade was to protect the Kings from the eventual Kopi decline or retirement. There’s so much assets and cap allocation to centers.

Was hoping he’d take a discount of 5-6, help throw money at a goalie, fix the 4th line or 3rd pair LHD.
It’ll still happen, $3mill nets us a 3lhd, the fourth line needs to be completely rebuilt and I could see them just throwing Helenius out there because if his size and maybe Laffy too as that where he’ll likely start his career..
Goalie wise, well we’re kinda f***ed there aren’t we

As there should be IMO.

2012 had Kopitar, Richards, Carter, Stoll. They moved Carter to the wing because of the center depth. Was great insurance if someone got hurt. Carter took draws on strong side. Not sure how many times we saw LA ice the puck than Carter or Rirchards get kicked out of the draw to buy more time. Having centered is a good thing.

Can anyone look up what % of the cap the combined Centers I listed above were in 2012 compared to this year (which will not even include Kopitars lower hit and higher cap once it kicks in)

I also remember being extremely lucky, like trailing 3-0 against the Sharks when TMac build the legendary choking artists.
I also remember the other Cup win where Vancouver hit the post twice in game 7 overtime before Stoll get the legendary slap shot

Bye Feild...it was nice knowing you. You ain't touching center ice for 3 more years here in LA. Wonder what we can get for him.

I think this is a discount for him, but not as much as people were hoping. Patrice deal would have been nice, but this is till a great day for Kings fans!
I agree that it is a great day, had he retired or wanted to play somewhere else the Kings might as well begin another rebuild.

The reason why I think it's a fair deal but not a discount is because the contract starts the season after this one and he'll be 37 by then. That's a lot of faith in his play staying at a very high level for the next three seasons. Sometimes the play of guys at that age just fall off a cliff.

Still, happy he's sticking around regardless!

I love Kopitar. It's great he's staying on and will likely retire as a Kings. but this is a dissapointment. First, it's more than what we should pay. I don't care how well he's played last season or seasons before -- it's the two years (after this season) that i'm more concerned with.

Further, it's a huge WTF move for the organization with centers and QB especially. If he's not moving to center anytime soon (which he won't be now), then they blew that pick. Even more so, they've blown keeping him. He should have been traded for a LHD, goalie, etc. when we had a chance -- if the organization had no plans in having him center a top 3 line.

Yet again, 'no plan' Blake in control of the organization.

The Kopi extension absolutely does NOT "guarantee" any of the following assumptions:
- 'Byfield is a goner'
- 'Byfield is locked in at wing for the next 3 years'

Could it maybe hint at those things being possible/probable??? Yes, sure.

But you guys make these claims as if they're absolute when in reality who tf knows how the next couple years play out.

If Kopi loses a step, he could 100% shift to LW. If Byfield has a breakout season and starts to look like a stud, they could absolutely move him back to center (probably not this coming season but definitely could happen during the 24/25 season)

These 'conclusions' you guys come to are so arbitrary sometimes lol. So much can change over the next couple years
