Where is this cap space coming from?

As others have stated already even if we signed a goalie for 1.5M we won't have any room to fill out the roster.

Especially when Bjugstad is coming off a good year and will be looking for a raise. We gotta be looking at the garbage bin for names like Sabourin.
I know. I was one of the ones pointing that out.

Two options:
1) Trade Arvidsson. Kaliyev and Fagemo take the middle six RW spots. They're 23 and 22 years old with ample pro experience. It's now or never. Is it ideal? No. But this is how things work in the cap world.

2) Cap shenanigans. LTIR candidates: Moore, Doughty, Arvidsson.

Cap space will accrue over the course of the season giving us some flexibility at the deadline to address needs.

Keep up 24, you move VA and try to sign some of the newly released guys who want to go to a playoff team..
I’d love Wheeler and Bjugstad at $1 mil or less each

Wheeler you can give a contract with performance bonuses to keep the cap hit down. He's a right shot with size, which is nice, but he's not defensively capable enough for for the 4th line, and I'd rather put kids in the scoring roles in the top 9.

Bjugstad signed for 900K in each of the last two seasons. He probably gets more this year. Would be good as 4th line RW or C IMO.

Well no one thought JQ would ever get moved.. i dont think its as far fetched as it seems since RB is doing crazy shit that defies logic
Different positions. Doughty can be moved down in the 2nd or 3rd lines, Quick only could play goal.Doughty won't be moved unless he wants to.

People who have taken serious swings at making a cap compliant roster seem to be the only ones realistic about the deep shit we are currently in.

"yeah just move Victor Arvidsson" = about 155 points gone from last year and only PLD to show for it in addition to a shortened roster and no 2nd goalie.

This is why even those that LIKE the PLD trade are like "well f*** now what"

People paying attention to a team like the Leafs last year should know what a constant low-level shit show managing the cap on a day to day basis will be. Injuries at the wrong time, callups being prevented to to cap compliance, being forced to call up inferior players because of a difference of 5 grand in AAV, ebugs, playing shorthanded. Absolute mess.

I think we could see a lot of 11-7 and 11-6 on rough nights.

No qualifying for JAD or MacEwen

Can still sign them in days ahead so reserving judgment but

Imagine keeping JAD hostage this long and simply...letting him go instead of playing or trading him. More great management. Let's minimize as many assets as we can!

PRediction--JAD goes UFA, MacEwen two year deal

I'm sorry guys, I am f***ing over it. It's exhausting.

I've taken plenty of serious "swings" and I think I know the cap situation very well.

Moving RV sucks, but it doesn't mean it's not the best option.

Yeah Arvidsson was one of their best players in the playoffs. Of course everyone says just replace him with Fagemo and Kaliyev, both players who should already be near that level but were never given the proper chance to develop. Now they need to be at that level cause of poor cap management and shortening the rebuild

JAD not being qualified was obvious. His potential arbitration process and award wouldn't fit. Been saying this for months now, even before the dumb Peterson/Walker deal.

I like the player very much, but this is why you can't wait until players are out of options before being integrated into the team.

What's the league min salary this year? Assuming that's what they're offering JAD.
Im probably wrong, but I thought I read on capfriendly the min qualifying offer is 1.05% of previous base salary on any contract signed before (cant remember exact date), 2020. So JAD would have been something like 800k. He's gotta agree to it though, and its sounded like the prospects are starting to revolt due to no opportunities. He's probably fed up.

JAD will get a deal somewhere. Thought a couple of years ago he would push Lizotte out but he never did. Like the player but not someone I will lose sleep over if LA does not bring back.

Sorta like Amadio.

We’re kind of just f***ed until Kopitar’s deal expires at the end of the year. That should hopefully clear a big chunk of space. I hope he re-signs for cheap, $5 million or less.
Kopitar has always asked for the most money he could get. His second contract he asked for 7 million bucks. He's probably going to want a 2 year 7 million dollar contract.

A whole crop of those couple draft years was not developed right. Guys like Vilardi, JAD, Kupari, Lias, Thomas, Madden and Dudas didnt really sniff a proper role until Vilardi got some top line minutes last year. At least they have Dubois to show for it but there was a good bit of talent in that range to only come out with Mikey Anderson. Funny enough he was the one immediately given a proper role to take.

Having no cap space is boring.

I can't even fantasize of the idea of Blake going after Michael McLeod since NJD didn't qualify him. Would rather he be our 4C than Lizotte.
